The IFP has lambasted the Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements for its poor record of failing to deal with public officials caught defrauding the state.
IFP Spokesperson on Human Settlements, Mr Petros Sithole MP said, “In 2006, 583 Bhisho officials were accused of abusing housing subsidies and in 2008 the Public Service Accountability Monitor took the department to court but nothing came of that. This shows that senior government leaders are not taking corruption seriously, which has created the impression that there are certain individuals who are protected from prosecution.”
“The IFP does not condone any form of corruption and a tougher stance needs to be taken against those who are found to be corrupt no matter the position they hold,” continued Sithole.
“Our concerns also extend to the failure of the department in providing people with RDP houses. The housing backlog in the Eastern Cape is very concerning because there are approximately 750 000 houses still to be built. It is disheartening because it means the budget allocated for housing is being misused,” said Sithole.
The IFP has made calls on the Special Investigating Unit to speed up the prosecution of all those involved in defrauding the state, asking for the imposition of harsher punishment to send a strong message to others that corruption will not be tolerated.
