How to Check an Electrician’s Registration AND the Validity of Your CoC

Straton Electrical advise you to first of all directly ask your electrician if he/she is a registered Electrical Single Phase Tester OR an Installation Electrician OR a Master Electrician. In addition your electrician should be able to provide their registration numbers for themselves and their business.

Definitions as per the Electrical Installation Regulations, 2009:

1. Electrical Tester for Single Phase: A person who has been registered as an electrical tester for single phase in terms of regulation 11(2) for the verification and certification of the construction, testing and inspection of electrical installations supplied by a single phase electricity supply at the point of control, excluding specialised electrical installations.

2. Installation Electrician: A person who has been registered as an installation electrical tester for single phase in terms of regulation 11(2) for the verification and certification of the construction, testing and inspection of any electrical installation, excluding specialised electrical installations.

Installation work means:

a. the installation, extension, modification or repair of an electrical installation.
b. the connection of machinery at the supply terminals of such machinery; or
c. the inspection, testing and verification of electrical installations for the purpose of issuing a certificate of compliance.

3. Master Electrician: A master electrician is a person who has been registered as a master electrician in terms of regulation 11(2) for the verification and certification of the construction, testing and inspection of any electrical installation. i.e the highest electrician level.

All electrical firms need to be registered with the Department of Employment and Labour and the National Bargaining Council for the Electrical Industry.

Your chosen electrician should be able to show you three things:

  1. Qualification as an electrical tester for single phase OR as an installation or master electrician
  2. Current registration documents with the DoEL (Department of Employment and Labour)
  3. Letter of good standing with the National Bargaining Council for the Electrical Industry which can also be obtained telephonically from any local NBCEI office here: https://nbcei.co.za/contact-us/

To verify the above, you can:

Visit and search the members of the Electrical Contractors Association of South Africa (ECA SA) – http://search.ecasa.co.za/ – and search there. PLEASE NOTE: The ECA SA is the largest voluntary association for Electrical Contractors and as such carries a lot of weight in the industry along with being more up to date than other associations.

OR

The NBCEI is a Bargaining Council as envisaged in the Act whose mission is to create and maintain industrial peace and stability in the Electrical Industry.

The Department of Employment and Labour is the primary custodian for the registration of electrical contractors in South Africa. The Department of Employment and Labour does NOT have a searchable database of registered electricians.

Visit the website of the Electrical Conformance Board of South Africa (ECBSA) – https://electrician.org.za/ – and search for your electrician there. The ECB SA is a voluntary association for electricians in South Africa.

Enter the necessary details to perform the search. This may include the electrician’s name, registration number, or other identifying information.

VERY NB: It is always best practice to confirm your search results from official sources and verify the information provided via the phone numbers for any associations or via email.

Complaints?

Quote the relevant numbers from your CoC such as CoC number, electrican and conmpany name and registration numbers given.

A CoC is a certificate issued by a qualified and registered master or installation electrician that Certifies that an installation is in compliance and in accordance with Regulation 7(1) of the Electrical Installation Regulations, 2009 at the time of the inspection.

CoC’s are issued under the aegis of the Department of Labour Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993.
