One of the biggest stumbling blocks to growing Africa’s growth as a continent of seafarers told one large step towards removal at the SAMIC2017 Maritime Conference in Port Elizabeth today.

The MOU was signed by (left to right above):
Sobantu Tilayi – Acting CEO SAMSA
Professor Malek Pourzanjani – SAIMI Chief Executive
Dr Hisashi Yamamoto – Secretary-General of Global On-Board Training
Ms Olufunmilayo Folorunso – a Maritime Lawyer and Publisher.
The formation of an African Global On-Board Training facility in South Africa will make on-board maritime training more accessible for Trainees from the African Continent and is seen as a vital link in the chain to increase the entry of seafarers from Africa into lucrative shipping jobs internationally.
It is estimated that African seafarers only comprise 10 000 of the more than 250 000 positions worldwide.
