Almost a self fulfilling prophesy, these words; “He’s my friend finished and klaar!” from a man who was mainly influential in disbanding SANAB a highly efficient and respected law enforcement specialist unit with a proven track record of arrests and convictions.
A picture is worth a thousand words in this case it also explains the many drug related deaths have taken place since 2004:

Dianne Kohler Barnard says specialised units need to be reconstituted
We would appeal our call for Minister Nathi Mthethwa to reinstate the South African Narcotics Bureau (SANAB).
A specialised anti-drug squad is needed in the drugs war against West African, Asian, Colombian and Afghanistan drug lords who have established a strong foot hold in South Africa.
South Africa needs a specialist hand picked group to engage all drug-activity areas across South Africa.
The reinstatement of SANAB would ensure that we properly tackle drug trafficking and drug related crimes, a dedicated specialist unit like the Narcotics Bureau (SANAB) remains the most effective tool for achieving this.
SANAB would network with other law enforcement agencies in fighting these criminals who have a grip on most countries in the world.
South Africa needs to network and build up the internal capacity to defeat these criminals who are threatening our youth and the hard fought future of all South Africans.
The latest statistics captured for the period Jul to Dec 2009 by South African Community Epidemiology Network on Drug Use (SACENDU) are alarming and should act as a wake up call to those in positions of influence and authority in Government.
The youth of South Africa are being systematically destroyed, their future reduced to ashes.
A summary of the age groups in treatment centres in South Africa’s major cities is shocking:
Percentage of age distribution in treatment Centres in South Africa:
Age in Years as a % of all ages in treatment (Have not shown the older ages as the call for help is centred on our youth)
| Ages |
Cape Town |
Gauteng |
PE |
EL |
Northern |
KZN |
Central |
| 10-14 | 2% | 2% | 1% | 4% | 1% | 4% | |
| 15-19 | 21% | 20% | 15% | 21% | 16% | 28% | 7% |
| 20-24 | 23% | 18% | 14% | 20% | 23% | 17% | 9% |
| 25-29 | 18% | 14% | 11% | 12% | 16% | 14% | 14% |
| TOTAL | 62% | 54% | 41% | 57% | 56% | 59% | 32% |
Over half of our potentially productive and future leaders are in drug treatment centres around South Africa.
Surely this tragic and alarming situation should be reason enough to reinstate the South African Narcotics Bureau (SANAB).
This Nations future hangs in the balance.
