Helenvale Attempted Murder Suspect Arrested

The continued recovery, seizure of firearms and arrest of suspects is a direct result of intensified crime prevention operations, intelligence collection, police visibility and the efforts of the members who work daily to ensure that illegal and unlicensed firearms are taken out of circulation and out of the hands of criminal elements.

On Wednesday, 12 July 2017 at about 11:45, members from Mount Road Cluster OCC were patrolling in Gelvandale when they received a ‘tip off’ from a community member of a person in Springbok Street in possession of a firearm. Immediately responding to the information, members noticed a group of males in the mentioned street. As they spotted the police, one of the males started running. A chase on foot ensued and the suspect was seen tossing a firearm in the yard of a house. The suspect was arrested by a member from SAPS Gelvandale and the firearm, a .38 special revolver and ammunition was recovered.

It was later established that the arrested person, aged 25 years, is also a suspect in a murder case in which allegedly took place on 13 June 2017. It is alleged that at about 13:00 a Dustlife gang member, Keenen Fortuin (28) was gunned down in Beetlestone Road by three suspects.

The suspect will be detained on a case of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as murder.

Attempted murder suspect arrested on the evening of 12 July 2017 within two hours after an alleged shooting, the Visible Gang Intervention Team apprehended a 22-year-old suspect for attempted murder. According to police information, at 15:00 on Wednesday afternoon, the 28 year old complainant was walking in Bramlin Markman Street in Helenvale when shots were fired at him. No injuries sustained. Within two hours after the incident, the suspect, a gang member was arrested in a shack in Bramlin Markman Street. He will appear in court on Friday, 14 July 2017 on a charge of attempted murder.

Housebreaking Suspect arrested: Mount Road

On 12 July 2017 at about 10:00, members from SAPS Mount Road were on duty when they were alerted by community members in Sydenham that a person was walking in the street with a TV wrapped in a sheet. The members spotted the person getting into a taxi. The taxi was followed and after a short distance it was pulled over. The person aged approx. 25 years, was arrested. Further investigations revealed that the suspect was seen exiting a house in Ambrose Street, Sydenham. The owner was contacted and confirmed that his house was broken into and that the TV belongs to him. Suspect detained for housebreaking and theft.
