Heatherbank Primary School, an NPO for underprivileged children from the Walmer Township, which currently educates, feeds and transports 48 children daily, will benefit from Varsity College Port Elizabeth’s on-going community engagement programme. In association with the Masixhasane Literacy Project, Varsity College Port Elizabeth’s 2014 Corporate Social Initiative is to supply the school with a mobile library unit and media centre.
The Masixhasane Literacy Project, aims to, with their mobile library units, generate a passion for reading among the disadvantaged schools and communities of South Africa. They are hoping to play a significant part in eradicating illiteracy in our schools today. Ellen Lovemore, Principal of Heatherbank Primary School says: “I have seen that by sponsoring one child’s education, it changes an entire community. Let’s change our country, one child at a time”.
To date Varsity College has held a BINGO evening as well as a Comedy Evening among other smaller fund raising initiatives such as cake sales, fill the library and raffles. A total of R40 000 has thus far been raised towards the mobile library. The target is R80 000 for the big mobile library which consists of: 2 locks and wheels keeping it mobile and secure, 1 year manufacturing guarantee, 32 inch TV, DVD player, 200 high quality books and 20 educational DVD’s.
In order to reach the fundraising target, sponsorships are essential and Varsity College is appealing to individuals and corporates financially to join the campus in reaching this goal and making a difference in the lives of Heatherbank Primary School learners.
