Health MEC must account for overplaced Pharmacy interns

Yesterday, I was furious to learn that a group of 11 Pharmacy interns have been informed that intern positions are “oversubscribed”.

These interns followed the Eastern Cape Department of Health’s (DOH) regulations and submitted paperwork timeously. They received electronic confirmations of placement as well.

So I ask with tears in my eyes, what happened? What gives the East Cape DOH the right to mess interns around like this at the last minute?

Will the Department of Health compensate interns who have paid deposits for accommodation and bought vehicles on the strength of electronic confirmation from the Department?

How will the Department assist overplaced interns who will lose a year’s internship if the Department fails to register their placement before closure of the Pharmacy Council on December, 23 this year?

Is this perhaps just a cost cutting exercise by a Department that cannot pay its bills and is pinching from Peter to pay Paul?

These questions will be submitted to the MEC for Health, Dr Phumza Dyantyi and the response will be distributed to the press.

Yet again, the East Cape Provincial Government demonstrates quite clearly that its attitude towards unemployed students is as uncaring as its attitude towards the closure and forced removal of frail care patients in the NMBM.
