October is the month to get SANS1657 bottled water testing done, according to H2O Guru. The SANAS-accredited water testing laboratory works with clients throughout South Africa and is urging water bottlers, refill stations and businesses that sell purified water to book now. Spring is in full swing and summer is on its way, and that is when demand for bottled and purified water usually climbs. Producers who check their water quality ahead of the hotter months can keep supplying customers with confidence.
South Africa treats bottled water as its own food product category. The Department of Health regulates and monitors it, and has set purity and safety standards for the water bottling industry. For anyone who bottles or sells drinking water, regular accredited testing is therefore a practical necessity rather than a nice-to-have.
Inside the SANS1657 package
The Bottled Water (Purified Water) SANS1657 package from H2O Guru covers chemistry and microbiology in one analysis. The work is done in the company’s accredited laboratory, reference T0647. On the chemistry side, the panel measures EC, pH, SAR, the Langelier and Ryznar indices, turbidity, colour, TDS, fluoride, chloride, sulphate, nitrate, acidity, alkalinity and bicarbonate. Calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium and boron are included, along with a broad spread of metals and trace elements: manganese, iron, copper, zinc, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, nickel, aluminium, antimony, arsenic, selenium, mercury and molybdenum.
For microbiology, the laboratory checks for faecal coliforms, total coliforms, heterotrophic plate count (HPC) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Taken together, the results show a bottler plainly whether the product meets the parameters in the South African National Standard for bottled water.
The cost is R3 150 including VAT, and payment is due before results are released. Results and analysis are currently taking about ten to twelve working days.
Putting results to work on the label
Accredited testing also gives bottlers something they can use. H2O Guru issues accredited certification that a business can display, showing customers that it takes the quality of its water seriously. For prepared water, the tested chemical composition can be printed on the bottle label, so buyers can see exactly what they are drinking.
According to the company, bottled water falls into three types: water bottled from natural sources such as springs, water defined by origin, and treated or prepared water. Every type must comply with hygiene standards, microbiological legislation, treatment labelling standards and chemical regulations. For more on industry standards, the H2O Guru website also refers bottlers to the South African National Bottled Water Association (SANBWA).
National reach for sampling
Being far from the lab does not rule out accredited water testing. Clients can have a H2O Guru representative take samples at their premises, or have samples collected by courier, with couriers operating nationwide. Sampling and collection carry fees. As a result, a small bottler in a rural town and a large plant in a metro can rely on the same accredited laboratory without moving samples themselves.
The laboratory was built specifically for drinking water chemistry and microbiological analysis. It uses automation, sample tracking and up-to-date analytical methods and techniques, and its instruments are reserved for drinking water testing, covering both regulated and non-regulated compounds of concern.
A first test gives new bottling businesses a baseline. Measuring later reports against it makes it easier to spot changes in source water, treatment equipment or handling practices over time. Established bottlers can take the same approach to confirm that filtration, disinfection and storage are still working as they should after a busy season, while building a documented record of quality checks to show retail customers or inspectors on request.
Testing beyond the bottle
Bottlers are this month’s focus, but H2O Guru tests many other water sources too. Its SANS241 packages, measured against the South African National Drinking Water Standard, come as drinking water chemistry only, microbiology only, or both combined. Other packages deal with borehole water, irrigation water, and waste and effluent water. The company advises that borehole water and any other source used for human consumption be tested at least once a year.
Its clients range from households to industrial and manufacturing operations, food and beverage producers, irrigation and agriculture, hospitality, construction and mining. H2O Guru’s services are accredited under various national and local standards, and its SANAS certification and complete list of tests and standards can be downloaded from its website.
Among South African water laboratories, H2O Guru treats accredited SANS241 testing as its first line of operation. Where results reveal a problem, it backs this up with turnkey solutions that help clients treat water into safe drinking water. ScaleStop water conditioners are part of its product range.
H2O Guru places its work against the backdrop of South Africa’s broader water situation, citing shrinking supplies and questionable quality in many areas. The company says it aims to offer services and products that help people gain and keep access to safe drinking water, a focus captured in its slogan, drink pure, live more.
The case for testing ahead of summer
Good-looking, good-tasting water is not automatically safe. Harmful bacteria, parasites and viruses are invisible to the naked eye, and some chemical contaminants lead to long-term health problems that can take years to appear. For a bottler, finding a quality problem after the product is already with customers costs far more than catching it through routine testing.
A test booked in October delivers results well ahead of December, giving bottlers time to adjust treatment, update labels or fix any problem before the peak season begins. Anyone weighing up accredited water labs can request a test straight from H2O Guru’s online form, which asks for province and city so sampling or courier collection can be organised.
