On day three of the Montreal 2013 IPC Swimming World Championships, Port Elizabeth swimmer, Kevin Paul won gold in the Men’s 100m Breaststroke SB9.
Paul won gold in a time of 1:05.85, improving on his London 2012 performance by one podium spot and beating Russian Paralympic champion Pavel Poltavtsev who could only manage bronze behind China’s Furong Lin.
Paul, the sastest qualifier in the Men’s 100m Breastroke SB9 said ahead of the final; “It’s not really a pressure to go to the finals with the best qualifying time. In the heats you just have to get the morning swim out of the way. I got silver in London and tonight is gonna be a good race against Pavel (Poltavtsev) again. We’ll see what’s going to happen.”
Poltavtsev, a 24 year old Russian swimmer is the holder of the 100 m men’s SB9 world record in a time of 1:03.59 which he set on 1 December 2009 in Rio de Janeiro.
Paul, a product of Grey High School set the African record of 1:05.70 at the 2012 London Paralympics.
