GM suppliers honoured for excellence

Twenty General Motors South Africa (GMSA) suppliers were awarded accolades for supplier quality excellence at a glitzy awards ceremony in Port Elizabeth on Thursday evening.

The winning companies are amongst 1 506 suppliers to General Motors manufacturing locations across the world who met or exceeded 13 stringent quality performance criteria to achieve the awards.

This is the third year that GMSA has measured and recognised its local suppliers against the corporation’s global standards for achieving the highest levels of quality performance over a 12-month period of supply to the company.

The number of suppliers who received awards has doubled since last year said John Astbury, GMSA Vice-President for Global Purchasing & Supply Chain (GPSC). “The awards criteria applied to all suppliers across the world, making this global recognition for South African-based suppliers, who play a vital part in the overall quality of our vehicles.

“We view their hard work and dedication as part of the foundation for GM to continue to be a leader in product quality and overall customer satisfaction,” he said.

Astbury said the supplier base had met the challenge he laid down last year to double the number of companies meeting the global quality criteria for the award, from 10 in 2013 to 20 this year, and for suppliers to demonstrate consistency by becoming repeat winners. Seven of this year’s winners were on the podium last year too.

“It was also pleasing to note that the 20 winners ranged from companies that had been supplying GMSA since the 1950s, to some that had joined the supply chain less than five years ago.”

The “youngest” suppliers to receive the award were third-time winner First National Battery and first-timer Trek Plastics, both suppliers to GMSA since 2010, while glass manufacturer Shatterprufe has been supplying GM vehicles since the 1950s.

The winning suppliers to GMSA are, in alphabetical order:

  • ACOUSTEX, first-time winner, supplying deadeners for the Chevrolet UTE, Spark and Isuzu pick-up models.
  • BOSAL AFRICA, first-time winner, supplying exhaust pipe and muffler components to the Isuzu pick-up.
  • CLOMARK, second-time winner, supplying stick-on data labels and decals for Chevrolet UTE and Spark, Isuzu pick-up and various GM import models.
  • CREATIVE GRAPHICS INTERNATIONAL, second-time winner, supplying stick-on data labels and decals for Chevrolet UTE and Spark, Isuzu pick-up and various GM import models.
  • FAURECIA INTERIOR SYSTEMS OF SA, second-time winner, supplying door trim panels for Chevrolet UTE models.
  • FEDERAL MOGUL SEALING SYSTEMS S.A, second-time winner, supplying exhaust flange gaskets for the Isuzu pick-up models.
  • FIRST NATIONAL BATTERY, a repeat winner in all 3 years that the award has been presented, supplying automotive batteries for Chevrolet UTE and Isuzu pick-up models.
  • KAYMAC STRUCTURAL FOAM, a first-time winner of the award, supplying the utility box ASM for the Isuzu pick-up Extended Cab model.
  • OPM TOOLING IMPORT AND EXPORT, a repeat winner in all 3 years that the award has been presented, supplying a range of small to medium size stampings for Chevrolet UTE and Isuzu pick-up models.
  • PRINCIPLE PLASTICS – Deal Party, first-time winner, supplying small to medium size plastic injection moulded parts for Chevrolet UTE and Isuzu pick-up models.
  • PRINCIPLE PLASTICS – Markman, second-time winner, supplying medium size plastic injection moulded parts for the Chevrolet UTE models.
  • S & N RUBBER, first-time winner, supplying small moulded rubber parts for Chevrolet UTE and Isuzu pick-up models.
  • SCHAEFFLER SOUTH AFRICA, a repeat winner in all 3 of the years that the award has been presented, supplying a range of clutch assemblies and a wheel bearing for Chevrolet UTE and Isuzu pick-up models.
  • SHATTERPRUFE – Struandale Plant, first-time winner, supplying the side door glass for Chevrolet UTE models.
  • SONDOR INDUSTRIES, a repeat winner in all 3 of the years that the award has been presented, supplying a range of foam products for Chevrolet UTE, Isuzu pick-up and Isuzu truck models.
  • STATELINE PRESSED METAL, first-time winner, supplying medium size stampings for Chevrolet UTE and Isuzu pick-up models.
  • SUMITOMO RUBBER SOUTH AFRICA, first-time winner, supplying a range of tyres for Chevrolet UTE and Isuzu truck models.
  • TREK PLASTICS, first-time winner, supplying small to medium size vacuum formed plastic parts for Chevrolet Spark and Isuzu pick-up models.
  • TRW OCCUPANT RESTRAINTS SOUTH AFRICA, first-time winner, supplying seat belt components for Chevrolet UTE models.
  • UTI-CMH SUB ASSEMBLY, second-time winner, supplying wheel and tyre ASM’s for Chevrolet UTE, Spark and Isuzu pick-up models.
