Girls for STEM programme hosted at Propella

Grade nine girl students in the Metro are being helped to prepare for a career in the sciences and technology through a partnership between the Propella Business Incubator and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.

The “Girls for STEM” programme co-funded by the US Department of State, focuses on empowering grade nine girls towards science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects and careers. It will be hosted at Propella Business Incubator in Humerail.

Selected grade nine girls from four schools around Nelson Mandela Bay will be taking part in workshops and tours at no cost to the schools or the pupils.

The programme is comprised of workshops, coding lessons, and “Aspire to STEM” talks which are all delivered by leading local women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

There will also be field trips to various companies and localities to observe how STEM skills are practised.

“The programme is designed for Girls to understand their strengths and preferences with regard to STEM subjects. We want them to understand their own possibilities and make informed decisions. We aim to inspire and empower them through this programme to work towards their career goals.” says NMMU Senior Innovation Manager Mary-Ann Chetty.

“Girls need the appropriate stimulation to expose them to different career opportunities in order to start envisioning themselves in the scientific and technical careers as adult professionals” says Business Support manager at Propella Business Incubator Ellen Fischat.
