German and Cape Choirs to perform in PE

Music lovers have a wonderful evening of choral music to look forward to on Friday, 22 August, when the Eastern Cape Children’s Choir will be hosting the Landesjugendchor Saar (Germany), as well as the newly established Stellenbosch University Chamber Choir.

The Landesjugendchor Saar, conducted by Alexander Lauer (currently cathedral choir master at the Speyer Cathedral), was established in 2008, and provides an opportunity for talented singers, between the ages of 15 and 30 years, to develop and further their musical talents. In 2012 they participated in the German Choir Festival in Frankfurt am Main, where the choir won a number of category prizes, as well as a prize for the best all-round choir.

They have recorded two CD’s, Hear a Voice (2010) and Ecoutez! Listen! (2014).

Martin Berger relocated to the Western Cape in April 2013, after a decade as the head of music at the St Kilian’s Cathedral in Würzburg, Germany. He is currently Head of Choral Conducting at the University of Stellenbosch where, as part of the development and growth of this department, he established the Stellenbosch University Chamber Choir at the beginning of 2013. The choir aims to be relevant both locally and internationally, with special focus on the introduction and promotion of new works by South African composers.The choir is not only open to music students, but consists of singers from all faculties at the University of Stellenbosch.

The Eastern Cape Children’s Choir, under the baton of Senior Lecturer (Voice) at the NMMU, Lionel van Zyl, is well known for its pure sounds, and high musical and technical standards.

The choir, consisting of children between the ages of 11 and 15 years, from across the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro and surrounding towns, has travelled overseas (Western, Eastern and Northern Europe, and the United Kingdom) on 11 occasions, eliciting standing ovations and repeated invitations to return. The ECCC has recorded 8 CD’s.

The concert, starting at 19h00, will be held at the Summerstrand Dutch Reformed Church in Louis Botha Crescent. Tickets are R50.00 for adults and R30.00 for pensioners, students and scholars.
