The Gamtoos Valley has become a very popular tourist destination with many B&B’s, self-catering and camping establishments, as well as restaurants, fuel-stops, banks and shops to choose from. Also known as the Eastern Gateway to the Baviaanskloof Wildernes Area, the Gamtoos Valley is a vibrant mix of nature, agriculture and cultural influences with plenty to see and explore along the diverse route. Citrus fruit grown is the main form of export and other crops include potatoes, vegetables, cucumbers, variety of types of lettuce, and fruit like strawberries…no wonder Gamtoos Valley is called the fruit basket of the Eastern Cape. The area is host to the annual Naartjie Festival, the largest Sundial in Africa, the grave of Sarah Baartman and the well-known 9-hole Hankey Golf Course.
Guarded by the majestic Cockscomb mountain the area offers visitors a range and diversity of activities to enjoy…from MTB, hiking, 4×4-routes, cycling, kayaking, fishing, bird-watching, game drives, and trips into the Baviaanskloof. Visitors can visit the Kouga Dam built in 1967 – the first double-arched dam engineered in South Africa. Along the way, look out for the unique rock formations – one may even be surprised to see Queen Victoria’s profile. Other attractions in the Gamtoos Valley to explore is Phillips Tunnel, Phillips Graves and Bergvenster (window in the mountain), and the famous Baobab Trees.
Baviaanskloof, a 192 000ha conservation area and World Heritage Site, is home to an amazing diversity of habitat types and species. From yellowwoods to karoo bossies, thicket spekboom to fynbos proteas, the Kloof is a nature lover’s paradise.
