Gale Force Wind no Deterrent to Marathon Runners

5 September 2011 By Alan Straton

Gale force winds this past Saturday couldn’t bring down the spirits of the runners who took part in the challenging 42.2km Afri-Save Marathon. Hundreds of people took part in the 42.2km marathon as well as the 10km and 5km fun runs.

The 42.2km Afri-Save Marathon that is organised in association with the Muirite Striders Club, is seen as one of the toughest runs in the region and to compete in it your fitness levels have to be of high standard. The race was previously known as the Goodyear Marathon, but Afri-Save took it over tyhree years ago. People from all over the country came down to compete in the race, including from as far as Johannesburg.

There was a huge crowd cheering the runners on, who were entertained by the various fun activities on offer, including soccer games, paint ball and delicious food stalls. There were also loads of lucky draw prizes that included dinner sets, coffee hampers, Woodlands Dairy vouchers and the main prize of the day was a day trip to Kwantu Private Game Reserve for four people. This amazing prize was won by Mrs Wendy Denston who was shocked speechless.

The overall winner of the race was Mzukisi Klaas from the Nedbank running club who completed the marathon in an astonishing two hours and fifty one minutes. This was his fifth time competing in this race. The race is a qualifier for the Two Oceans and Comrades Marathon.

“It was great to see the community come together in supporting this race, even though it was terribly cold and windy and we would like to thank all the parties who made the marathon possible again this year”, said Munir Jeeva, the Director of Afri-Save Cash & Carry.

Mzukisi Klaas who was the overall winner of this year's 42.2km Afri-Save Marathon, receiving his prize and medal from Afri-Save representative, Tracey-Lee Scott.
