Fun, Games and Success in Mount Croix

28 January 2011 By Alan Straton

The Neighbourhood Watch guys in Port Elizabeth more often than not have a boring old time walking the beat whilst their neighbours snuggle under warm duvets smelling their own emmissions.

Every once in a while a Neighbourhood Watch member will have a day when everything just keeps going right and Thursday 27 January was one of those days for Gordon Smart from the Mount Croix CPF:

I received a call from an elderly couple at Bayview Avenue this evening (27 January) at about 18h35 regarding a black male who had jumped their boundary wall from Paul’s house in Cambridge Rd and then disappeared up Bayview Avenue.

I was driving home and happened to be fairly close by, so I stopped to get more information from the couple, including a clothing description. I drove around in the immediate vicinity and this suspect had vanished! As I passed the corner of Eastbourne Road and Athlone Road this suspect suddenly appeared…. and I had just come through there?

I stopped and arrested the suspect and had the Flying Squad back-up there in seconds (I had just phoned Captain Rassie Erasmus who happened to be on duty).

No sooner had I arrested the guy than I received a call from a resident in Athlone Road saying that he had just had a guy try and open his garage! (Was the same suspect trying his luck again!!). Whilst on the cell phone I asked him to look down the street and to see if my “customer” was his “affirmative shopper “? He couldn’t believe that we had the suspect already!

We returned to Paul’s house in Cambridge Rd where this guy started.   We confirmed that he was trying to steal a weed eater, as it had been removed from where it had been left and was lying against the remote driveway gate for easy removal!  ….the Mount Croix NHW and residents were just one step ahead again! J

Just shows how the sharing of phone numbers and having one another’s details as well as the Forum’s important numbers in Cambridge Rd, does work!
