#BacktoSchool excitement for Funimfundo Primary School

Transnet National Ports Authority’s (TNPA) Port of Port Elizabeth, in collaboration with the keen angling community of Nelson Mandela Bay, brought excitement to learners and teachers at Funimfundo Primary School with their #backtoschool proceeds handover.

The Port of PE charity fishing day, that took place on 15 February, collected about R25 000 worth in stationary, which culminated in a handover full of excitement at Funimfundo Primary School in Veeplaas.

Altogether 330 Grade 3 to 7 learners at the school received rulers, pencils, pens, erasers, exercise books and pencil cases collected from the fishing day. In addition, TNPA donated atlas books, dictionaries and maths sets -all in aid of making learning easier for the Zwide based primary school.

Port Security Manager, Nelson Masophi said “It gives an organisation like TNPA great pleasure to undertake collaborative initiatives – such as our quarterly fishing days, involving the people of Nelson Mandela Bay – to assist us in ensuring that we remain involved in the educational needs of the communities that we operate in. It is important that we empower our community schools with learning material such that our learners can simply concentrate on doing their best, without worrying about whether they have a pencil.”

The learners were treated with some dancing entertainment and a snack pack to end their exciting school day.

Funimfundo Primary School was established in 1980 and accommodates 590 learners from Grade R to 7 from areas such as Veeplass, KwaZakhele, Chetty, Izinyoka and Zwide to name a few. Whilst the school is supported by the Department of Education with a nutrition programme and some school supplies, past experience has proved that these are not enough to last the learners for the school year.

The TNPA fishing day initiatives are held quarterly at the Port of PE, allowing anglers of the city the opportunity to fish securely from the Charl Malan Quay. More than 200 city anglers contributed to the success of the stationary collection, all providing stationary packs worth at least R100 as entrance to enjoy a day of fishing at the Port.
