First Time Milestone for Stubbs

7 December 2023 By Port Elizabethan

Warriors coach Robin Peterson is full of praise for the three Dafabet Warriors players who have been included in the Proteas squads for the all-format inbound tour against India from 10 December – 07 January.

Dafabet Warriors batter Tristan Stubbs has been included in the Proteas test squad for the first time.

“I think it is a real feather in Tristan’s cap to be selected for the test squad, which is every young player’s dream,” says Peterson

“It is great that they realise he is not only a T20 player. He can play the long format and probably even prefers it in my opinion. He has obviously impressed Shukri Conrad, the test coach.

“He richly deserves an opportunity as he works extremely hard. We are very proud of him”.

The 23-year-old Stubbs, who is already capped in both white-ball formats, impressed with his 117 for South Africa A against Sri Lanka earlier this year and most recently struck 130 against DP World Lions in the last round of CSA 4-Day Domestic Series matches, according to Cricket South Africa (CSA).

Known as the Freedom Series, the Indian tour of South Africa consists of three KFC T20 Internationals (T20Is), three Betway One Day Internationals (ODIs) and two Betway Test matches.

Dafabet Warriors players included in the T20I squad against India are Dafabet Warriors captain Matthew Breetzke, Marco Jansen and Tristan Stubbs.

“Matthew has been part of the Proteas T20 squad against Australia at the beginning of the season. They like Matthew’s ability to play a great all round game,” says Petersen.

“It is another richly deserved opportunity for Matthew to play against high level opposition like India. Hopefully we will see him in action at his home ground Dafabet St Georges Park to entertain the fans.

“We know how much playing here means to him”.

Included the Proteas Test squad against India are Marco Jansen and Stubbs.

“Marco has been an all format player for a long time so there are no surprises with him being there.

“Marco had an outstanding World Cup and we are very proud of him and to see his trajectory go up so quickly after only being with us for two years.

“Watching him perform really inspires all the other players in the Warriors squad.

“It is a great opportunity for him without Kagiso Rabada there to lead the attack, having played more cricket than most of the guys at international level and franchise cricket around the world,” says Petersen.

Freedom Series action comes to the Dafabet St Georges Park in a T20I on Tuesday, December 12 and a one day international to be played a week later on Tuesday, December 19.
