Dear MyPE
The DA will take up the plight of forgotten students at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges across the province and make sure the necessary funds are made available to ensure they receive education of a very high quality.
Today, 21 February 2019, I did an oversight inspection at PE College’s Dower Campus in Port Elizabeth. I was joined by NMB Councillor and Democratic Alliance Student Organisation (DASO) Constituency Chairperson, Baxolile Nodada, PE College SRC President, Euzelle Ruiters, and NMB Councillor Duncan Monks. TVET institutions across the country have been plagued by labour strikes over the last 6 months and the impact is now being felt at PE College.
Unions experiencing employment issues with the Department of Higher Education and Training recently called for a national shutdown and yesterday PE College’s Dower, Russell Road and Iqhayiya Campuses were shut down.
No learning and teaching is taking place whilst the uncaring and failing ANC government finds it impossible to resolve labour issues.
The state of infrastructure and lack of high-quality education at PE College are some of the other glaring issues.
Buildings are in a state of disrepair and there is a lack of resources and housing for students.
TVET Colleges must receive similar funding and resources as universities.
DA parliamentarians will now add the plight of TVET’s into budgetary speeches to make sure that TVET Colleges are treated the same as universities.
Yusuf Cassim MP, DA Team One South Africa Spokesperson for Students, has already started driving this issue in parliament in an effort to hold the Minister for Higher Education and Training, Naledi Pandor, to account.
Students should not be made to suffer because the Minister and her Department are incapable of doing their jobs.
The DA will continue fighting to ensure that no student is left behind in building One South Africa For All.
Regards
Athol Trollip
DA Federal Chairperson
