Fear Not Said He For Mighty Dread Had Seized the Municipal Employee Mind

27 April 2021 By Alan Straton

Read on to discover my one discriminatory flaw!

If we have any hope of moving forward in pride, love and prosperity in Nelson Mandela Bay then we need to ensure that those entrusted with the nuts and bolts of the running of our city are NOT fearful of their continued employment and also AIM for that Change.

A corrupt government is one that runs employees on fear – fear of losing their jobs should they not support the ruling party is the most corrupt relationship we can ever have.

Over the years we have witnessed how successive governments use the public servant body for their own ends – the Colonial Government only employed supporters, the Apartheid Government only employed supporters, the present Government has learned the same tactic.

As a Candidate Councillor in Nelson Mandela Bay’s Ward 7 I would like to bring “great tidings of joy” to our public servants by declaring:

  1. I do not discriminate on the basis of political affiliation or any other grouping BUT
  2. I DO discriminate against anyone who does not put Nelson Mandela Bay and her citizens first by not doing their job.
  3. As a municipal employee your political affiliation, race, religion, gender, language or any other discriminatory term means squat.
  4. The only measure of performance is whether you are doing an effective and productive task day in and day out.
  5. If you do something and lose money – learn from it and improve dramatically.
  6. If you don’t do anything then be afraid.
  7. If you subvert or steal expect consequences.
  8. If you go beyond your duty, thank you.
  9. Have pride in what you do – to serve (and be paid for that) is an incredible gift.
  10. Always be on the look out to save and make the City prosper as we have a shared responsibility amongst ourselves and with everyone in this City to make it the Best Little City in the World (thanks to Gary Koekemoer for that sentiment!).

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
