Port Elizabeth – Christopher Panayiotou’s parents, who have been supporting their son since he was first accused of master-minding his wife Jayde’s murder, arrived at court on Thursday for the continuing bail application.
Panayiotou’s parents were joined by other family members who filled up the entire front row in the public gallery of the court at the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court.
Some family sat chatting to reporters who had packed the court room. Some members of the public had also arrived to attend court proceedings.
Panayiotou’s lawyer Terry Price, who was absent from court on Wednesday, arrived around 09:00 and went to talk to his client’s parents.
Price was not in court on Wednesday when Panayiotou’s bail application was meant to continue.
He was in Johannesburg and expected to fly to Port Elizabeth on Wednesday afternoon.
The matter was postponed on Wednesday because of confusion over who was representing Panayiotou.
Advocate Theuns Roelofse told the court that Price would resume his duties as Panayiotou’s lawyer on Thursday.
Magistrate frustrated
Magistrate Abigail Beaton said she was not happy with the substitution.
Panayiotou, 28, Thando Siyoli, 31 and Sizwezakhe Vumazonke, 30, were arrested in the days following Jayde’s disappearance.
She was last seen waiting outside their home in Kabega Park for her lift to Riebeeck Park High School on Tuesday, April 21. She was found dead outside Kwanobuhle township in Uitenhage the following day.
Panayiotou is facing charges of conspiracy to commit murder; robbery with aggravated circumstances; kidnapping; murder; and defeating the ends of justice.
