EP Open Water Swimming Champions

30 January 2012 By Alan Straton

This past weekend saw new EP open water swimming champions crowned during a busy EP Open water swimming Championships at Marina Martinique, Jeffreys Bay. Swimmers from around the province took part in round 3 of the Cirrus Bio-ears swim challenge Series which featured the EP Championship 10km, 5km and 3km events. First champions to be crowned on Saturday afternoon were Dominic Greeff and Rebecca Newman, the new EP 10km marathon swim champions, winning in a time of 2hrs 31min and 49 seconds and 2hrs 39min 6sec respectively. Unfortunately both swimmers times were outside of the Swimming South Africa qualifying times for the 10km swim.

The EP 5km swim championship race was won by Jonathan Roux (1:05:03) and Lise-mari Goosen (1:11:05) with a face chasing Jason Jones (1:05:36) and Daniel Jones (1:06:14) taking the silver and bronze in the men’s race whilst Chane De jager (1:13:06) and Chrislie Niehaus (1:14:58) took the podium medals in the ladies race. All were well within the qualifying times for the national championships in March this year. The 3km race was dominated by Andrew Fischer (37:19) with Wesley Wiehahn (38:48) in second and 5km champion, Roux (39:10) taking 3rd place. In the ladies 3km race it was Megan Van Wyk (40:03) from Veruschka Jordaan (40:28) and Caro de Jager (40:28).

Also swum on the weekend as part of the Cirrus Series was a 1km swim which was won by Caro de Jager (13.32) with JC van Wyk (14:29) in second and Seth de Swardt (14:37) taking 3rd place overall. Children 14 years and under took part in a 500m open water swim which was won by Jade Grobbelaar from Kyle de Lange and Kristyn Evans. Children 10 years and under got to compete on the morning, racing from bank to bank with Meagan Horton winning from Roland van Wyk and Linzi Scholtz.

Supported by Willard Batteries, the Zports Masakhane Future Stars Development Trust had 16 swimmers from Motherwell competing in the Championships. The first Future Star swimmer across the line was Mkhululi Heka (16:49), placing a very creditable 7th in the Men’s 1km race.

Next swimming event at Marina Martinique will be on Sunday 4th March.
