With the EP Kings leading 21-12 against the Cheetahs at half-time on Saturday 25 January 2014 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth excited fans were looking forward to bit of sweet revenge.
But it was not to be as the Cheetahs came out and dominated possession for most of the second half and finallly broke the log jam of sterling defence when Raymond Rhule scored to edge the Cheetahs to a one point lead.
A number of questionable non decisions, around driving maul off the lineouts, by the referree led to three of the Cheetahs tries.
At the post match conference Robbi Kempson made it quite clear that “if you know your rules” those situations would not have been allowed.
The first half was a satisying one for the Kings and their rabid fans who were treated to some enterprising play among their backs to score three fine tries.
Centre Ronnie Cooke opened the scoring when he pounced on a Cheetahs midfield error to kick the ball through, gather and dive over.
The Cheetahs hit back from a penalty five metres from the Kings line when skipper Adriaan Strauss bashed his way through to level the scores.
The Kings showed a willingness to send the ball wide to give fullback Siviwe Soyizwapi two tries whose second was a remarkable effort and came off of a Cheetah attack with the ball ending up behind the Kings’ line, only for wing Michael Killian to claim possession and to start an attack down the left flank. The movement ended with Soyizwapi crossing for a thrilling try in the right corner after the ball had gone the length of the field.
The visitors, however, had the measure of the Kings pack in the driving maul and three times they were able to maul from lineouts close to the home line for tries from Jean Cook (2) and Boom Prinsloo.
Final Score: 36-21.
