The Pumas fought their way to a 29-13 victory against a spirited EP Kings side featuring the union’s back-up players due to the Vodacom Super Rugby clash between the Bulls and Southern Kings.
The Friday 28 June game was played in front of a disappointingly small crowd in sharp contrast to previous clashes between the two sides which have seen previous attendance figures close to a capacity crowd for the NMB Stadium.
The EP Kings, despite some spirited attacking moves failed to penetrate the Pumas defence time after time.
The Pumas played most of the last quarter of the second half with 13 players and, embarrassingly during this time, still managed to send wing, Trompie Pretorius crashing over the EP Kings tryline for his second try of the match.
Lowlights of the game were the inordinate number of penalties given against both sides.
Scorers:
- Steval Pumas: Penalties – 5 (Carl Bezuidenhout), Tries – 2 (Trompie Pretorius), Conversions – 2 (Carl Bezuidenhout)
- EP Kings: Penalties – 2 (wesley Dunlop), Tries – 1 (Wesley Dunlop), Conversions – 1 (Wesley Dunlop)
Other Absa Currie Cup First Division round 1 results:
- Regent Boland Cavaliers 15 – 45 Leopards
- Border Bulldogs 12 – 36 SWD Eagles
- Valke 30 – 30 Down Touch Griffons
