Dear Editor
“The lady doth protest too much, methinks.” quotation from William Shakespeare’s Hamlet play came to mind when a proverbial comrade from the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality was obsfucating and defending the said local government’s naïve yet arrogant obstinance during a NUMSA-chaired Quartely General Meeting [QGM] at Volkswagen’s Engine Plant about two months ago.
I sincerely felt sorry for her as she seemingly did not believe in the script she was apparently delegated by her commissars to read from, regarding the unrepentant insistance on every municipal ratepayer’s account payment deadline to be the cast-in-stone 25th of each month; irrespective of the public & private sectors’ different wages and salary dates.
The hapless yet cautiously credible Hawks [Department of Public Prosecutions] should look into that increasingly racketeering enforcement of rates’ payments, lest it is renamed to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s beloved Ankole cattle just after the 2024 General Elections; as that breed of livestock is big on its huge horns’ reach-out but hopeless in effective jabbing. Maybe, the incumbent Public Protector, Adv. Kholeka Gcaleka, should also look into that blatant economic oppression, lest she is also dubbed as just another custodian and protector of the black elite, palm-greasing white capitalists and/or black educational snobs; essentially the apparent godmother of the Convention for a Democratic South Africa [CODESA] Posterboys [and Ladies] circa 1993.
Racketeering instead of sincere revenue-collection is therefore what could be described when a huge chunk of electricity units are endlessly and forcefully sponged off upon buying prepaid electricity whenever the 25th of each month’s payment deadline has already passed, thus making sure that our de facto Governing Cartel does not fail in its mandate to enrich and protect its Anointees, Beneficiaries and Indoctrinees.
If the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s head honchos really wanted to, they would have hired their beloved “consultants” long time ago to look into making the electronic accounting system flexible to accommodate different payment dates, unless a Tender has not already been issued for the usual CODESA Posterboys [or Ladies], that is, ANC Anointees and/or South African White Capital Approved Individuals or they have not been identified as yet.
It becomes frustratingly so when potholes are a permament feature on our roads, as well non-functioning traffic lights, unkempt grass, water and sewerage running down the road which cannot justify the non-existent upkeep and maintenance through that automatic rate payments’ daylight robbery; if not actual municipal money laundering.
