From the Atlas Security Crime Newsletter we have picked out a couple of interesting crime incidents:
An elderly woman resident of Recreation Road, Theescombe was found beaten to death shortly before 16h00 on Tuesday afternoon.
The woman’s husband arrived home and could not locate his wife. After a few minutes of searching the house, he eventually found his wife’s battered body on the garage floor. She had been badly beaten with a blunt object. He immediately contacted the Police who notified ATLAS of the incident. At the time of the incident, the alarm was not armed and ATLAS did not receive any panic signals.
The Police and ambulance arrived and the elderly woman declared deceased at the scene. During the investigation, no signs of forced entry or blood splatters were found. No arrests have yet been made.
The Police are investigating a case of murder.
Summerstrand family sleeps through burglary
A family in Louis Botha Avenue, Summerstrand slept through a burglary on Tuesday night last week.
When the homeowners woke at 06h00 on Wednesday morning, they discovered that their home had been burgled. ATLAS and the Police were dispatched to the house to investigate.
They inspected the premises and found that the criminals climbed over the back wall and entered the yard. They managed to open a small window next to the front door and gained entry.
While the family was sleeping, the thieves had full access to the house. A very expensive watch, an electric shaver and a DVD player were stolen. Fortunately the family did not wake up and make contact with the criminals.
A case of housebreaking is being investigated.
Opportunistic burglars strike Lorraine home
Opportunistic burglars struck it lucky at 12h41 on Saturday afternoon when they broke into a house in Macon Road, Lorraine after noticing that the homeowner was working in the garage.
When the owner went back into the house, he noticed that his lounge window had been forced open and the burglar bars were kicked in. He contacted ATLAS to report the incident and a Response Team was dispatched.
It appeared that the criminals were spying on the owner and struck while he was working. They gained entry via the lounge window and had full access to the house. The lounge was ransacked and a laptop, including the bag, and other valuables were stolen. A large sum of money was also taken from the owner’s wallet. The criminals fled with their loot without being detected.
A case of housebreaking was opened with the Police for investigation.
Staff held at gunpoint in Korsten
Staff members at a business in Durban Road, Korsten were held at gunpoint during an armed robbery at 10h02 on Wednesday morning last week.
Three criminals entered the shop, pointed their guns at the staff and demanded all the cash in the store. The employees complied and gave all the money to the gang.
The Police were contacted and are investigating a case of armed robbery.
In a separate incident on Thursday last week, a shop in Berg Street, Korsten was robbed by three armed men at 09h02.
The men barged into the shop and robbed the owner of cigarettes, cash and cell phones. An altercation ensued and the owner was stabbed in the arm. The Police were notified and two of the three suspects were arrested on the scene and their firearms were confiscated. The third criminal managed to escape and sped off with the stolen goods in a white Toyota minibus.
At 16h19 the following day, the very same Berg Street shop was robbed and this time four suspects were involved. All four men were armed with firearms and robbed the store of an undisclosed amount of cash. The Police and ATLAS were notified of the incident and responded immediately.
The suspects fled the scene in a silver VW Polo and shots were fired. Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident.
The Police are investigating both cases of armed robberies.
Walmer employee robbed at gunpoint outside shop
A staff member employed at a business in Heugh Road, Walmer was robbed by an armed suspect in front of the shop at 19h05 on Friday evening.
A member of the public stopped the patrolling Response Officer and reported the incident. The Officer responded and called for backup. The female victim confirmed that a male in his late twenties, wearing navy blue shorts, a cap and carrying a bag on his back, had robbed her. He held a revolver to her head and robbed her of her wallet and a set of keys to premises.
The Police searched the area, but were unsuccessful. A case of armed robbery is being investigated.

- 04:08 A business in Patterson Road, North End was burgled. The Police managed to catch and arrest four suspects who had a bakkie full of stolen copper.
ON TUESDAY 03 MAY 2011:
- 03:17 An armed robbery took place at a business in Crawford Street, North End. The security guard caught a suspect who was armed with a firearm. The suspect was under the influence. The previous week the suspect stole the security guard’s cell phone and his firearm.
- 04:56 A business in Govan Mbeki Avenue, North End had an attempted burglary. The suspects tried to force open the back gate, but no entry was gained.
- 07:00 Thieves broke into a vehicle at a residence in Glengarry Crescent, Humewood. The criminals broke through the small back window and stole the radio and an undisclosed amount of money.
- 13:55 A suspect broke through a window at a business in Strand Street, Central and threw items around inside the premises. The Response Officers managed to catch and arrest the suspect.
- 15:27 A residence in Constance Road, Broadwood was burgled. The criminals forced open the bedroom window and kicked in the burglar bars. Entry was gained and a cell phone was stolen.
- 15:54 A homeowner in Recreation Road, Theescombe was murdered. The owner’s husband arrived home and found his wife’s body in the garage. The elderly woman was badly assaulted and beaten with a blunt object. The Police and ambulance attended to the incident.
- 20:33 A residence in La Roche Drive, Humewood had an attempted burglary. The security gate was damaged, but no entry was gained.
- 21:30 A medical emergency took place at a residence in Barrydale Road, Miramar. The owner’s husband suffered a heart attack. The ATLAS Officers assisted until the ambulance arrived to transport the owner to hospital.
ON MONDAY 02 MAY 2011:
- 00:30 A residence in Cambridge Street, Mount Croix was burgled. The criminals smashed a window.
- 06:38 A premises in Western Road, Central was burgled. Three criminals gained entry into the garage and stole two ladders. The Response Officers found all three suspects and arrested them.
- 10:38 A suspect stole a piece of roof sheeting from a business in Fearick Street, Neave Township. The Response Officers arrested the suspect and handed him over to the Police.
- 12:00 A business in Strand Street, Central was burgled. The criminals broke through the roof.
- 19:06 A business in Murrey Street, Graaff-Reinet was burgled. Two suspects broke the bottom door, but no entry was gained.
ON SUNDAY 01 MAY 2011:
- 03:01 Thieves stole copper piping from a business in Springfield Road, William Moffett.
- 04:42 A business in Sutton Road, Sidwell was burgled. A window was smashed and the burglar bars were kicked in.
- 05:07 A business in Park Drive, Central was burgled. The suspects used a broom to break the top window.
- 08:33 A business in Cadle Crescent, Sidwell was burgled. A piece of the roof sheeting was removed and entry was gained. The criminals made off with the cash register and cell phones.
- 13:41 A business in Kwaford Road, Struandale had an attempted burglary. A window was broken.
- 13:42 A business in Crane Road, Greenshields Park was burgled. One of the windows was removed.
- 14:02 A residence in Birdlip Avenue, Linkside was burgled. One large window was broken and entry was gained. Three computers and a monitor were stolen.
- 15:23 A business in Westview Drive, Mill Park was burgled. A window was smashed and entry was gained. An undisclosed amount of jewellery was stolen.
- 17:32 A business in Cape Road, Mill Park was burgled. A window was smashed, but no entry was gained.
ON SATURDAY 30 APRIL 2011:
- 00:58 A residence in Doncaster Road, Central was burgled. The criminals broke the spare bedroom window and bent the burglar bars. Entry was gained. Two suspects were involved in the burglary and the Police managed to arrest one of them.
- 01:44 A sheep was stolen from a premises in La Marseilles Road, St Albans.
- 07:30 A premises in River Road, Walmer was burgled. The suspects gained entry into the house and stole jewellery.
- 07:54 Thieves vandalised a business in Heugh Road, Walmer. The gate motor was damaged, but no entry was gained into the premises.
- 12:41 A residence in Macon Road, Lorraine was burgled. The suspects forced open a window and kicked in the burglar bars. The owner was in the garage while the criminals broke in. They ransacked the lounge and stole a laptop and a large sum of money from his wallet.
- 14:21 Thieves set books on fire at a premises in Colorado Road, Missionvale. The fire department arrived to extinguish the blaze.
- 15:50 A business in Cape Road, Mill Park was burgled. The criminals broke the glass door.
- 19:11 Thieves stole copper piping from a residence in Willcocks Street, Sydenham.
- 20:39 A business in Reed Street, North End had an attempted burglary. The front gate was forced open, but no entry was gained.
- 21:21 A business in Ring Road, Greenacres was burgled. The security guard reported that a suspect tried to break one of the windows, but fled when he saw the security guard.
- 21:28 A business in Ring Road, Greenacres had an attempted burglary. One of the windows was broken, but no entry was gained.
- 22:12 The Response Officers arrested a suspect that was hiding in Brickmakers Kloof, Central. He was apparently spying on the houses.
ON FRIDAY 29 APRIL 2011:
- 02:57 A business in Pier Street, South End was burgled. The criminals forced open the bathroom window and kicked in the burglar bars.
- 16:19 An armed robbery took place at a business in Berg Street, Korsten. Four armed suspects entered the store and robbed the owner of an undisclosed amount of money. The criminals fled in a silver Polo. Shots were fired, but no one was injured during the incident.
- 16:22 An attempted burglary took place at a residence in Sluysken Road, Sunridge Park. The suspects forced open two windows and broke the lock on the door. No entry was gained.
- 19:05 An armed robbery took place outside a business in Heugh Road, Walmer. One of the employees was robbed outside the premises. The suspect held her at gunpoint and took her wallet and a set of keys.
- 22:04 A residence in Jutland Crescent, St Georges Park was burgled. The criminals made a hole in the window close to the door handle, but fled when the alarm activated.
- 22:34 A residence in Second Avenue, Summerstrand was burgled. The criminals broke the kitchen window and kicked in the burglar bars. Entry was gained. The main bedroom was ransacked, a laptop was stolen and the wires in the house were damaged.
- 23:39 A business in Cille Street, Forest Hill was burgled. A window was removed from the frame.
ON THURSDAY 28 APRIL 2011:
- 07:25 A business in York Road, North End was burgled. The criminals cut a hole in the roof and ceiling.
- 07:36 A homeowner in Main Road, Walmer reported that his wife was missing. She is mentally unstable and did not take her medication. The Response Officers patrolled the area but found no trace of her.
- 08:31 A residence in Hattingh Road, Summerstrand was burgled. The back sliding door was broken and entry was gained. A flat screen TV and the DSTV decoder were stolen.
- 08:45 A business in Cuyler Crescent, Central was burgled. The criminals broke the front window and forced open the burglar bars. Entry was gained and a computer was stolen.
- 08:57 A residence in Rooseveldt Road, Glendinningvale was burgled. The criminals smashed a window. During the investigation, it could not be confirmed whether entry was gained.
- 09:02 An armed robbery took place at a business in Berg Street, Korsten. Three armed suspects entered the store and stole cigarettes, cash and cell phones. They also stabbed the owner. The Police managed to arrest two of the suspects who were armed with firearms. The third suspect fled in a white Toyota minibus and got away with the loot.
- 11:19 A business in Rotterdam Street, Kabega Park was burgled. One of the windows was broken, but no entry was gained.
ON WEDNESDAY 27 APRIL 2011:
- 06:00 A residence in Louis Botha Avenue, Summerstrand was burgled. The suspects opened the small window next to the door and gained entry. An expensive watch, an electric shaver and a DVD player were stolen.
- 08:20 A medical emergency took place at a residence in Greenways Street, Lovemore Heights. The owner’s 89-year-old husband suffered a stroke. The ambulance arrived and transported him to hospital.
- 10:02 An armed robbery took place at a business in Durban Road, Korsten. Three suspects entered the store and held the staff at gunpoint. They made off with an undisclosed amount of money.
- 10:52 A pile of wooden poles in the back yard of a premises in Sutton Road, Sidwell caught fire. The fire department managed to extinguish the blaze.
- 10:59 A premises in Conyngham Road, Parsons Hill was burgled. The suspects gained entry via a window.
- 11:19 A business in Circular Drive, Lorraine had an attempted burglary. The back door was forced open, but no entry was gained.
- 23:41 A business owner in Buicker Street, Rosedale (Uitenhage) reported that a few men were fighting on the premises. They wanted to fill up with petrol and attacked the petrol attendant. The Response Officers attended to the incident.
