Eight A’s open door to R75 000 scholarship

A third set of siblings are now part of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s (NMMU) Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship programme for academic excellence.

Collegiate matriculant Roxanne Weiss, who achieved eight A’s and an average of 88 percent, joins her brother, Jayme, and siblings Daniel and Ronald Strydom and Greg and Timothy Olls, as a Vice-Chancellor’s Scholar.

She is one of 30 new NMMU students to receive the R75 000-a-year Scholarship established by the Vice-Chancellor Prof Derrick Swartz in 2010.

“When I attended the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship welcoming dinner for my brother two years ago I made it my goal to become a Vice-Chancellor’s Scholar too. This is a dream come true for me,” said an elated Roxanne, 18, of Humewood.

A Vice-Chancellor’s Scholar sticker pinched from her brother’s folder and stuck above her desk at home provided a constant reminder of her goal – to join this elite band of academic achievers.

“I wanted to receive the same opportunities that my brother has got. I worked hard to achieve it. I’m thrilled,” said Roxanne, who will be studying BCom Accounting.

She obtained 95% for Accounting – her eighth subject – taught to her by her father, former Grey High teacher, Dean Weiss.

BCom Accounting continues to be the most popular choice among NMMU’s Vice-Chancellor’s Scholars especially given the ongoing success of the programme’s graduates. NMMU students consistently achieve top marks in the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (Saica) external examinations.

Four of the six siblings – Daniel and Ronald Strydom, Roxanne and NMMU graduate Timothy Olls – chose BCom Accounting. Roxanne’s brother opted for another top degree at NMMU – BComRat (Computer Science and Information Systems).

Apart from the financial support that the Scholars receive if they continue to attain distinctions, the new cohort will benefit from other development initiatives.

“We want our Vice-Chancellor’s Scholars to be well-rounded achievers,” says Acting Deputy Director: Marketing Jo-Anne Daniels.

A formal dinner welcoming the new Scholars will be held at the university on Wednesday 12 February.
