Education Department congratulated on swanky new Jeffrey’s Bay school

10 April 2015 By Port Elizabethan

Dear MyPE

The DA congratulates and thanks the department of education for the swanky new R75-million high school in Jeffrey’s Bay.

After seven years the Jeffrey’s Bay Comprehensive High School will welcome 454 learners when its doors open on 14 April 2015 for learners.  This is a parallel-medium school built for 800 learners which will negate the transport issues learners have had to deal with in the past in order to get to school in Humansdorp.

I visited the school yesterday and I am glad to say that all 16 teachers have been appointed, with a caretaker principal. The DA supports the department’s decision to appoint a person with the necessary expertise to see the school through the first months of its existence.

Of concern is that there are currently no desks and chairs for teachers in classrooms, in the administrative building or in the staff room.  Furthermore, support staff and two secretaries have been appointed on a temporary basis through the EPWP instead of through departmental structures.

We hope that those Grade 8 and 9 learners moving from Pelsrus- and Lungiso Primary Schools to the new school will be bringing their workbooks and handbooks with them, as well as the necessary state funding.

A sewerage dam located across the school is problematic, but the DA has communicated this to the Kouga Municipality.

We hope that the community will embrace this new school and uphold it as an example of a state school of excellence.  May the department continue to build schools to increase access to quality education for all children in the Eastern Cape.

Regards
