Eastern Province Rugby Coaches Association Launched

The Eastern Province Rugby Union is proud to announce the launch of the Eastern Province Rugby Coaches Association over the past weekend.

The launch, which was attended by a number of coaches from provincial and amateur level, as well as head coaches from the Grand Challenge clubs, took place on Saturday, 19 January 2013.

The association aims to provide a platform for rugby coaches in the province and assist in capacity building among coaches across various skills levels.

The new association’s representation will be made up of a representative from each sub union within EPRU, as well as a representative each from primary schools, high schools, woman’s rugby, referees and legends. It will also include two representatives from the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture.

The association will be chaired by the person appointed to either the Coaches Development Manager or Game Development Manager position, and will include a treasurer, secretary and resource manager.

The launch was accompanied by a skills workshop in association with the Eastern Province Rugby Union, who provided access to Director of Rugby, Alan Solomons and Southern Kings coaches Matt Sexton, Omar Mouneimne and Brad Mooar. The coaches were treated to theoretical insights on a wide range of topics ranging from week plans and season structure to ruck defence and phase play attack. They were also treated to demonstrations on field of various drills and techniques they can utilise in their training.

The workshop was well received by coaches and similar workshops will be rolled out to other parts of the province over the next year.

The Association will also be looking at developing an online library and database of coaching material for use by its members, as well as looking at providing training opportunities for coaches to improve their own skill sets.
