Early Signs of Arthritis You Should Not Ignore

Affinity Health, a leading provider of high-quality health cover, says that people should pay closer attention to ongoing joint pain, stiffness, and swelling on World Arthritis Day (12 October).

It is easy to blame aching joints on age, hard work, exercise, or an old injury. However, arthritis can begin with small changes that are easy to dismiss.

Arthritis is not one disease, but a broad term that covers many conditions affecting the joints and surrounding tissues. Common types include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis.

Some types develop as the cartilage protecting a joint breaks down. Others are caused by inflammation or an immune system problem. Recognising the signs early matters because the right treatment can ease symptoms, protect the joints, and help prevent long-term disability.

Joint Pain That Keeps Returning

Pain is often one of the earliest signs of arthritis. It may feel like a dull ache, a sharp pain during movement, or discomfort that comes and goes.

Osteoarthritis pain often becomes worse after walking, climbing stairs, carrying heavy items, or repeatedly using the joint. Inflammatory arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis, may hurt most after rest or when you wake up.

Occasional joint pain does not always mean arthritis. However, pain that lasts for several days, keeps returning, or begins interfering with normal activities should be checked.

Morning Stiffness

Pay attention to how your joints feel when you wake up.

Short-lived stiffness can occur with osteoarthritis, especially in the knees, hips, hands, or spine. It often improves once you start moving.

Stiffness lasting longer than 30 minutes may point to inflammatory arthritis, particularly when it affects several joints. You may struggle to make a fist, grip a toothbrush, bend your fingers, or walk comfortably when getting out of bed.

Swelling, Warmth, or Redness

A swollen joint may look larger than usual, feel tight, or become difficult to bend. The skin may also feel warm.

These changes can happen when inflammation or extra fluid builds up in or around the joint. Rheumatoid arthritis commonly affects matching joints on both sides of the body, such as both wrists, hands, or feet, although this is not always the case.

Redness may be harder to notice on darker skin, so check for warmth, swelling, tenderness, and changes in movement too.

A joint that suddenly becomes severely painful, hot, and swollen requires urgent medical attention, particularly if you also have a fever or chills, or generally feel unwell. These symptoms may be caused by an infection inside the joint, which needs prompt treatment.

Difficulty Moving or Using a Joint

Arthritis can gradually make everyday movements more difficult. You may notice you can’t fully straighten a knee, lift an arm comfortably, turn your neck as far as before, or bend down without pain.

Small changes also matter. Struggling to open jars, fasten buttons, write, use a key, or carry a shopping bag can point to problems in the hands, fingers, or wrists.

Avoiding movement because of pain can weaken the muscles supporting a joint, making movement even harder over time.

Grinding, Clicking, or Giving Way

Joint clicking is common and does not always mean something is wrong. However, a grinding or grating feeling accompanied by pain, swelling, or stiffness may be linked to damaged cartilage.

A knee or hip that feels unstable or “gives way” can also signal a problem. This may happen when the joint becomes less stable, or the surrounding muscles weaken.

Changes Beyond the Joints

Not every sign of arthritis is felt only in the joints. Inflammatory arthritis can affect the whole body.

Warning signs may include:

  • Ongoing tiredness or a lack of energy.
  • A mild fever or generally feeling unwell.
  • A poor appetite or unexplained weight loss.
  • Scaly skin, nail pitting, or nails lifting away from the nail bed.
  • Persistent lower-back stiffness that improves with movement.
  • Joints that appear enlarged, knobbly, or different in shape.

These symptoms can have several causes and do not automatically mean you have arthritis.

Conclusion

Do not wait for joint pain to become severe. Seek medical advice if unexplained pain, swelling, or stiffness persists, keeps returning, or affects daily life. Note which joints are affected, when symptoms occur, and how long morning stiffness lasts, as this information can help with diagnosis.

Early treatment can help protect the joints from lasting damage.
