Early Inspiration wins at the South African Early Childhood Development Awards

The South African Early Childhood Development Awards, has today announced that Early Inspiration has won the national award for Best Early Childhood Development Programme.

Championed by the National Development Agency in partnership with UNICEF, the South African Congress for Early Childhood Development, the Department of Basic Education and Social Development, it recognises and celebrates best practice and outstanding participation in early childhood development (ECD).

Early Inspiration, based in Port Elizabeth, was founded by Dr. Lauren Stretch in 2010 and aims to enhance development of young children throughout South Africa through practitioner training and home interventions.

Dr. Stretch said of the win: “Early childhood development is vital for the success of our country. The programme was created specifically to empower those who are unskilled and working in the underprivileged sector of South Africa, and provide them with knowledge and understanding of how children develop. By understanding this can they enhance growth and provide a stimulating environment, unleashing young children’s potential.”

Dr. Stretch’s recent research for her PhD into the effectiveness of practitioner training in underprivileged early childhood development, uncovered that a deep practitioner understanding of childhood growth and development results in effective stimulation and development which in-turn sets them up for a successful progression in their education.

She adds: “It is from my experience, and findings in my PhD studies that the Early Inspiration Programme came to life. This win cements for me the work the team and I have put into it, and what we have managed to achieve for thousands of child care practitioners and the children they work with.”
