Dreyer Linen’s Guide to Specifying Hotel Linen for Summer

9 September 2026 By Alan Straton

September has become a specification month for Dreyer Linen, the Johannesburg maker and distributor of bed linen, towels and bedding accessories, as South African hospitality operators start placing their orders for the December holiday trade. Summer rooms are typically locked in months in advance, and the linen that dresses them has to be bought long before anyone checks in. The company’s argument is a simple one. When guests grumble about hotel bedding, price is rarely the real issue. The trouble usually traces back to a specification that never suited the property to begin with.

Hans Dreyer founded the business in 1955, and it is the third generation of the Dreyer and Blumenau family who steer it today. What began as a single linen operation has grown into a manufacturer and distributor that serves hotels, guest houses, lodges, mines, schools, retail outlets and private homes nationwide. Because the company both produces and distributes its goods, it can discuss specification in practical, hands on terms rather than through a sales pitch.

Specification, not price, decides how long linen lasts

There is no saving in a sheet that gives out after four months. On its own website Dreyer Linen has laid out how thread count, fibre content and towel weight ought to line up with a property’s grade, and September is precisely when that advice earns its keep. Anyone preparing for a summer opening or a mid-season refresh still has room to order properly, take delivery and work the stock into rotation before every room is full.

Ranking among the more established hotel linen suppliers in Gauteng, the company keeps its message steady. Work out what the room needs to do, and let that decide the cloth. A budget guest house laundering every day carries a very different brief from a lodge that swaps bedding every third night, and both differ again from a five star city hotel where the bed itself is part of what the guest is paying for.

Thread count explained properly

Thread count counts the threads running along the warp and the weft within each square inch of fabric. Percale opens at a floor of 180 threads per square inch and climbs as high as 1000. As a rule, a higher count signals a tighter, smoother and hardier cloth, yet the figure only carries weight once you read it together with the fibre.

Dreyer Linen carries 200 and 400 thread count choices in cotton and in polycotton blends, while its hospitality percale line spans 200 TC, 300 TC and 400 TC. The buyer’s benchmark the company publishes runs roughly like this. A two star property is usually well matched by a 132 thread count 50/50 blend. Three and four star properties step up to 144 thread count in a 50/50 blend, and four to five star properties to 200 thread count in a 50/50 blend. A five star room wants 200 thread count in 100 percent cotton, while a six star room asks for 300 thread count in 100 percent cotton.

The fibre sitting behind each of those figures counts every bit as much. Cotton is softer, more supple, breathes more freely and takes up moisture. Polyester resists creasing, dries faster and asks less in the way of care. A 50/50 polycotton blend lands in the middle of the two, which explains why so much commercial bedding is written that way. It stands up to an industrial laundry, emerges looking tidy, and skips the ironing time pure cotton insists on.

Towels are bought by weight

Bathrooms follow the same reasoning, only here quality is gauged in grams per square metre instead of thread count. The heavier the towel, the more it soaks up and the longer it serves. The company’s published figures set a two star property at 380 to 440 gsm, a three to four star property at 440 to 450 gsm, a five star property at 550 gsm, and a six to seven star property at 550 to 650 gsm. When absorbency is the goal, 100 percent cotton stays the pick.

The towel line spans hand towels, bath towels, bath sheets, hand and bath sets, bath mats, pool towels and face cloths, with weights that take in 485 gsm and 630 gsm. The wholesale line adds 100 percent cotton eco friendly Indulgence towels and Snag Free towels, the latter meant for properties where towels snag on fittings and hooks often enough to cut their useful life short.

Protectors do the quiet work

Mattress protection is the piece of a hospitality linen order guests never lay eyes on, and one managers only register once it has been left out. Cotton stretch toweling protectors and quilted polycotton protectors each lengthen a mattress’s life and help hold dust mites in check, and the quilted polycotton versions come in water resistant options. Weighed against the cost of replacing a mattress ahead of schedule, fitting a protector to every bed ranks among the simpler calls in a linen budget. The line takes in mattress toppers and pillow protectors too.

Bulk supply out of Gauteng

Manufacturing capacity underpins the product lines. Dreyer Linen partners with high capacity linen factories in Gauteng, and that is what lets it handle large volume orders on short production times. For operators it means a supply line based inside South Africa instead of an import lead time, and it is why the company can quote exceptional turnaround for properties that need stock on hand before a season opens.

The wholesale catalogue takes in premium bed linen such as duvet covers, pillow cases, flat sheets and fitted sheets, hospitality percale in 200 TC, 300 TC and 400 TC, natural and synthetic inners, hotel quality blankets, waterproof and non waterproof protectors, cotton towelling, and hotel quality tablecloths and napkins in plain colours and timeless jacquards. Hotels, guest houses, lodges, mines, schools and bulk buyers are offered special pricing, and wholesale quotes go through the contact form or straight to Brandon Blumenau at brandon@dreyerlinen.co.za.

Retail and residential buyers use the same ranges

Private customers are served as well, and the overlap is by design. A household picking a duvet cover set is drawing from ranges engineered to withstand commercial laundering, a handy yardstick for a home too. The retail catalogue holds bed wraps, fitted and flat sheets, sheet sets, duvet cover sets in Classic, Oxford and Egyptian Cotton styles, pillow cases, duvets and pillows, and blankets and throws, in 100 percent Cotton Percale 200TC, Polycotton Percale 200TC, Egyptian cotton and microfibre. Online orders go out in three to five days, delivery is free above R1 000, and a selection also sits on Takealot.

House brand names take in Cosyella, Regency Royale and Feather Touch. Among Linen Suppliers active in the South African market, that pairing of house brands, factory capacity and a retail shopfront is fairly rare, and it is what allows a single supplier to fit out a mine hostel, a boutique lodge and a private home from one catalogue.

A Johannesburg base and a showroom by appointment

Dreyer Linen runs from 49 Julbert Rd, Benrose, Johannesburg, and its linen showroom opens by appointment, which works for buyers who like to feel the cloth and weigh options side by side before signing off on a volume order. Managing director Meyer Blumenau came into the business in 1968 and has clocked more than fifty years in textiles. Brandon Blumenau, who carries an accounting honours degree, came aboard in 2003 and looks after sales, finances and strategy. The company is BEE certified.

The full product lines, the thread count and towel weight guidance, and the wholesale enquiry details all live on the Dreyer Linen website at https://dreyerlinen.co.za/.
