Dear Editor
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Nelson Mandela Bay will be filling the leadership vacuum left by absent NMB mayor, Gary van Niekerk, in Kariega to ensure that the residents of this area are not forgotten.
Today, 22 June 2023, I visited the mayor’s office in the Kariega Town Hall and was joined by DA councillors Franay van de Linde and Roelf Basson.
At least once a week, during my 8-month tenure as Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor, I worked from the mayoral office in Kariega to ensure a focus on local residents. The previous multi-party coalition also held a mayoral committee meeting in the town hall.
Since Van Niekerk took over as mayor in May of this year, he has not been to Kariega once.
He is embroiled in internal squabbles within his own party (Northern/National Alliance?) and has made no time to address service delivery issues in Kariega.
I will be working from Kariega once a week and will also be available for appointments at the town hall. Van Niekerk has proven to be inept and out of his depth, so the DA will do his job for him.
We will not be deterred from this commitment to the people of Kariega and will continue our efforts at the town hall.
The DA will not allow the ANC/EFF Doomsday Coalition and its puppet mayor Van Niekerk to forget the people of Kariega.
We will fight for all our residents in Nelson Mandela Bay.
Regards
Cllr Retief Odendaal
DA NMB Caucus Leader
