Domestic Worker Minimum Salary Increases for 2016

17 November 2015 By Alan Straton

Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant on Monday announced that wages in the domestic worker sector will be adjusted upwards from 1 December 2015.

The increase is in terms of Sectoral Determination 7.

  • An employee that works more than 27 hours in Area A (major metropolitan areas) should be paid no less than an hourly rate of R11.44, R514.82 weekly and R2 230.70 per month.
  • An employee that works less than 27 hours in Area A should be paid no less than an hourly rate of R13.39.
  • An employee that works more than 27 hours in Area B (areas not covered in Area A) should be paid no less than an hourly rate of R10.23, R460.15 weekly and 1 993.82 monthly.
  • An employee that works less than 27 hours in Area B should be paid no less than an hourly rate of R12.07, 325.98 weekly and R1 412.49 monthly.

According to the Department of Labour, the new determination will be effective until the end of November 2016.

“Sectoral determination covers the protection of workers in vulnerable sectors/areas of work. The determination sets minimum working hours, minimum wages, number of leave days and termination rules,” the department said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Minister has also announced a salary adjustment for workers in the contract cleaning sector with effect from 1 December 2015.

In terms of Sectoral Determination 1, the minimum wages will be adjusted upwards for employees in Area A and Area C.

Area A and Area C include local and major metropolitan areas and the rest of South Africa, with the exclusion of areas governed by Bargaining Councils.

An employee that works in Area A should be paid no less than an hourly rate of R18.01 and an employee that works in Area C should be paid no less than an hourly rate of R16.41.

The new determination will be effective until the end of November 2016. – SAnews.gov.za
