DigitFMS Launches SA’s Smallest Tracker: It Fits on a R5 Coin

Table of Contents

Midrand: South African electronic security and fleet technology company DigitFMS has launched the Digit D-Micro7, which it describes as South Africa’s smallest tracking device. Small enough to rest on a R5 coin, the wired Bluetooth unit measures approximately 21 mm long, 9.5 mm wide and 4 mm thick. It is designed to be concealed inside vehicles and other powered assets, either as a second layer of recovery alongside a primary tracker or as protection for assets that would not justify a full tracking unit. Enquiries are handled by DigitFMS branches, which advise on suitability and installation.

A second layer, not a replacement

Larger trackers can only be fitted where there is room for them, and a tracker that is found can be removed.

The D-Micro7 is aimed at that gap. Its size allows it to be fitted where larger trackers cannot go, which makes it harder to find and remove. DigitFMS positions it as a covert back-up for stolen vehicle and asset recovery that can work alongside a customer’s main tracker. It is not a fleet management device and does not replace a tracking system.

The device also gives owners a way to protect lower-value assets that would not justify a full tracking unit.

How the D-Micro7 reports its location

The D-Micro7 does not calculate its own position and carries no SIM card. It is wired to the asset’s permanent power supply and transmits a unique Bluetooth identifier. Compatible mobile phones within range detect that identifier, and the nearest phone’s location is relayed with it over the mobile network to the Digit server.

Relayed positions are shown in DigitWeb tracking and the Digit applications. As they build up, they form a trip report showing an estimated distance travelled and the general route taken, while the device keeps its signal transmission to a minimum. Because no SIM card is involved, there is no SIM to buy or manage.

Built for a wide range of assets

The D-Micro7 accepts a 5–60 V DC supply, so the same model can be fitted to motorbikes, cars, trucks, boats, golf carts and other powered assets. The same applies to equipment such as generators, gate motors, displays, computers and servers. Any asset needs a permanent 5–60 V DC supply.

It draws approximately 6 mA at 12 V, and is designed to stay permanently connected to the asset’s own power. Installation uses a two-wire power and ground connection, and the unit has reverse-polarity protection. Its operating temperature range is ?20 °C to +60 °C, and it has a built-in Bluetooth antenna with power-amplifier (PA) hardware signal enhancement.

Because it is fully compatible with DigitWeb tracking and the Digit applications, the D-Micro7 sits alongside a customer’s other Digit devices.

Where it fits

The D-Micro7 is designed for one role: a covert back-up. Its location updates come from compatible phones that pass within range, so reporting frequency and trip detail vary with its surroundings. Continuous real-time tracking remains the job of a primary tracker, with the D-Micro7 adding a hidden layer behind it.

The unit draws its power from the asset rather than an internal battery, and relays locations over third-party networks. Full specifications and service details are on the product page.

The D-Micro7 is designed to complement, rather than replace, an insurer-approved tracking system. DigitFMS branches can advise on the right combination of devices for each vehicle or asset.

“A tracker that can be found can be removed, so we wanted to give owners a recovery layer that is much harder to find,” said Rordon Cowley, Founder and CEO of DigitFMS. “It works alongside a primary tracking system, and our branches help each customer decide where it adds the most protection.”

Relevance and availability

For South African fleet operators and asset owners who already use tracking for recovery, the D-Micro7 adds redundancy without replacing existing systems. It also extends protection to equipment that would not justify a full tracking unit.

The Digit D-Micro7 is available through the DigitFMS branch network. Branches advise on whether the device suits a particular vehicle or asset, and on installation. Product details are at https://digitfms.co.za/vehicle-tracking-for-fleet-management/digit-d-micro7/.
