JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng, South Africa — Designer Pool Covers, a South African supplier and installer of pool covers, is drawing attention to the running costs that a covered pool avoids, arguing that heat retention and reduced evaporation make a cover one of the more cost-effective investments a pool owner can make. An uncovered pool loses heat from its surface, drives up chemical and filtration demand and accelerates water loss through evaporation. The company states that a well-fitted cover can reduce evaporation by up to 95 percent, a figure it attributes to the barrier a cover places between the water surface and the air.
The company said the saving is not limited to water. A covered pool holds its temperature for longer, which reduces the energy required to heat it and the volume of sanitising chemicals consumed to keep it clear. Designer Pool Covers said those smaller monthly costs compound over a season, particularly for pool owners running pumps and heaters through summer. The company positions the argument as part of a broader move toward treating pool ownership as an energy and water decision, not only an aesthetic one.
“A pool is one of the few home assets that quietly bills you every month,” said Willem De Wet, founder of Designer Pool Covers. “Heating, chemicals, filtration and evaporation all add up. A cover attacks those costs at the source, because heat and water stay where they belong instead of going into the atmosphere.”
Designer Pool Covers supplies four cover types: thermal blankets, a pet and child safety cover, PoolDeck Slatted Automatic Covers and Automatic Vinyl Safety Covers. The company said thermal blankets are designed to lock in heat and reduce energy costs, while its automatic pool covers add convenience and, because they are approved safety devices, a barrier against accidental entry. The company states that its Automatic Vinyl Safety Covers can open and close in less than 60 seconds.
Cost is the other half of the equation. The company’s published guidance sets the typical price of a winter cover between R2,000 and R4,500, a solar cover between R12,500 and R18,000, and an automatic cover between R150,000 and R350,000, depending on pool size and specification. Designer Pool Covers said buyers should weigh those figures against the running costs they offset over the life of the cover. Its pool cover costs article sets out the comparison in detail.
“An automatic cover is a serious purchase, and the company says so rather than pretending otherwise,” De Wet said. “The point is what it saves you afterwards — fewer chemicals, less water, lower heating. Owners should do that arithmetic before they decide, not after.”
Designer Pool Covers said a cover also reduces the maintenance load. Less debris entering the water means less filtration and fewer chemical treatments, and the company recommends servicing a cover annually before the summer season, with more attention for automatic models because they contain more moving parts. It states that vinyl and safety covers typically remain functional for six to 10 years with proper care.
The company operates in Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town and George and states that it has completed more than 4,500 installations since it was established in 2012. It said the case for covering a pool has grown as households look for ways to cut recurring costs, and that the environmental argument — conserving water and energy — carries weight alongside the financial one. Its pool covers South Africa range is custom-made to measure for indoor, outdoor, residential and commercial pools.
“Owners do not cover a pool because it looks tidy,” De Wet said. “They cover it because it stops money evaporating with the water. Saving the resource and saving the rand are the same decision.”
Designer Pool Covers said it provides free quotations and offers maintenance for existing covers. Pool owners weighing whether a cover earns its keep can read the company’s are pool covers worth the investment analysis on its website and request a quote through the same channel.
