Deja Vu – Yes it is true!

10 June 2011 By Alan Straton

Steve’s flood has finally arrived and once again invaded our precious sanctuary. The overflowing Groendal dam at 118% capacity had to open its gates and the poor village of Redhouse has once again been the casualty as the Redhouse Yacht Club buildings have once again been laid low by flood waters.

Thanks to the vigilance of Di and others we managed to get an early warning out, and by 12:00 a lot of members were able to move boats out of harm’s way. The exotic  menagerie  of overloaded vehicles and trailers in convoy leaving the village was a true testament to the teamwork of members and villagers pulling together in a crises. A massive Thank You to Dave, James and Tracy for all the help as we managed to get the rescue boat and all the club Teras out of the Sailing School shed just as the water started to cover our proud canons on the front lawn. To the Lochheads, Peter Groenewald, Benno, the Martin/Harth family and all the others that got wet helping out, thanks.

By 20:00 last night the water was a foot or more over the window sills of the main building and the alarm system had also headed for higher ground, this will create a problem over the next few weeks as affirmative shoppers may take advantage of the opportunity and come looking for bargains.

The villagers are on high alert for looters, so fair warning to opportunistic ‘shoppers’!

By 09:00 this morning the water level had subsided substantially, and is still decreasing. The boat sheds are intact although the water level rose to above lock height, in other words more than halfway up the doors. Luckily boats float!

Our prayers and thoughts go out to all those that have been effected by these floods both in the village and elsewhere.

Regards

Andrew Butler
