D’Avray appointed as Chippa FC’s tech director

5 September 2014 By Alan Straton

On Wednesday afternoon Chippa United Football Club announced that Mich D’Avray has been appointed as its Technical Director, with immediate effect.

Speaking at the club head office in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Club Chairman, Siviwe Mpengesi expressed the Board’s satisfaction at the appointment of the experienced former professional footballer who has played a major role in the success of several clubs with which he has been involved, both locally and internationally.

“Mich played an instrumental role in Bloemfontein Celtic’s tremendous success in recent times and we are excited at the prospect of benefitting from his wealth of experience and expertise as we strive to take Chippa United to the next level,” said Mpengesi.

The former Ipswich Town midfielder who also represented England at Under 21 level, has enjoyed stints as manager of Premiership teams Moroka Swallows and Cape Town Spurs. As South Africa’s Coach of the Year in 1993 he led Cape Town Spurs to a league and cup double in the 1993/94 season, and went on to coach the South African Under 23 team for four years (from 1993 to 1997).

Speaking at Chippa United’s home ground about his new position, D’Avray had this to say: “I seek to impress upon our players that they have the potential to be successful and I believe that I can play a part in inspiring the Chili Boys to attain that success”.

In a strange game of one step forward followed by one step back, it was announced that Kosta Papic had tendered his resignation as coach, citing personal reasons. The team will, in the interim, be managed by caretaker coach, Roger Sikhakane.

Chippa United moved to Port Elizabeth following promotion to the Absa Premiership. As part of its vision to run a truly professional outfit, the Nelson Mandela Bay-based PSL club’s decision to appoint D’Avray is a step towards achieving that goal.
