Danny Jordaan’s hiring of top lawyers confirms he has a serious corruption case to answer

A News24 exposé has revealed that ANC Mayoral Candidate for Nelson Mandela Bay, Danny Jordaan, has hired top lawyers to defend himself in a corruption probe undertaken by the FBI. This probe was initiated following the confirmation that South African officials were involved in paying a $10 million bribe to secure the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

To date, Danny Jordaan has denied his involvement in this corruption scandal, despite a letter, dated 10 December 2007, proving that he directly authorised and signed off this payment.

Danny Jordaan has not been forthcoming in this regard. It is now crystal clear that he does have a corruption case against him, and he has been misleading the South African public in general, and the people of Nelson Mandela Bay in particular.

The DA demands that Danny Jordaan now makes an urgent public statement before tomorrow’s election, where he is a candidate, and finally tell the truth about his involvement in this horrendous corruption scandal.

The people of Nelson Mandela Bay, who have faced endless corruption and high unemployment under previous ANC administrations, do not deserve 5 more years of being kept in the dark.

My colleague, Solly Malatsi MP, will now also demand an update from the South African Police Service into their own investigation into the matter. This follows the DA’s laying of criminal charges against Danny Jordaan, given the prima facie evidence which existed in the public domain. Despite these charges being laid last year, no action has been forthcoming. SAPS must now act and fully cooperate with international investigations.

These elections will be the most important since 1994. South Africans face a critical choice: more dishonesty, corruption and joblessness under the ANC; or radical change that will create jobs, deliver better services and stop corruption, under an honest DA government.

This latest information proves that this choice has never been any more important. Tomorrow, we urge South Africans across South Africa, from Nelson Mandela Bay to Tshwane, to vote for this positive change that will move our country forward again.

Jordaan is the former chief executive officer of the local organising committee (LOC). In the wake of the FIFA scandal, he has admitted agreeing to a $10m payment to the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) for its so-called African Diaspora Legacy Fund.

The FBI says this was a bribe by South Africa to “buy” Concacaf’s three votes for hosting the 2010 tournament. The FBI has identified two South African “co-conspirators” in its indictment, who are yet to be named.

Both conspirators were identified as “high-ranking official(s) of the 2006 South Africa World Cup bid committee and the 2010 South Africa World Cup bid committee and local organising committee” in the indictment.

Only Jordaan, former housing minister Tokyo Sexwale and Orlando Pirates boss Irvin Khoza served on both bid committees and the LOC.
