By

Defending champion Dan Howitz of Port Elizabeth was in top form on Sunday morning to claim victory in the first round of the About IT Triathlon Summer Series held in perfect conditions between Pollok Beach and Sardinia Bay.

Howitz took the lead during the 20km bike leg after coming out of the 750m swim in third place and maintained this lead throughout the 5km trail run to finish the sprint distance triathlon in 1hr 05min and 53sec ahead of Ryan Peter and Ryan Johnson. Liza Bright was the fastest lady on the morning, winning in a time of 1hr 14min 6sec from Jade Hooke and Genelle van der Riet. Matthew Scott won the junior category in 1hr 12min from Rinaldo Morgia and Dewald Allers whilst Alec Riddle teamed up with son Jamie to win the team category.

Over 100 triathletes took part in this fun triathlon which continues with Round 2 on Sunday 23rd at Pollok Beach and concludes on Boxing Day, 26th December, with round 3 at Port St Francis.

“It was a great turnout for the start of this holiday triathlon event and bodes well for Rounds 2 and 3 next week,” said Series director Mike Zoetmulder of Zports. “There was terrific diversity in the field which is what this Series is all about – up front you have Howitz and Peter, there was World age grouper Alec Riddle and also in the mix was former Springbok rugby star Ollie le Roux along with the families who make up the team categories.”
