Dam Levels Increase to Same Levels as at 31 March

9 May 2011 By Alan Straton

Today’s dam level press release from Kupido Baron of the Nelson Mandela Bay Communications department, was titled; “Average level of major supply dams for Nelson Mandela Bay increased slightly”.

The average level of major storage dams supplying the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality increased by 3% after good rain fell in the city’s catchment areas. On Friday the average dam level was 31,1%. Finally after TEN weeks of decreasing levels our dams received good rains, but we are NOT out of the water yet.

I tend to disagree with the word ‘slight’ though, as an increase of 3% on a level of 31.1% is actually just under a 10% INCREASE. OK, in comparison to the 12% to 24% increases for Municipal Services I suppose that 10% is a slight increase.

The rainfall for Friday & Saturday was as follows:

  • Impofu Dam (second biggest storage dam): 139 mm
  • Churchill Dam (third biggest storage dam): 75 mm
  • Loerie Dam: 42 mm

Major Storage Dam levels supplying the Metro (as at 9 May 2011), Capacity – Volume of water:

  • Kouga: 40,4%
  • Churchill: 31,5%
  • Impofu: 21,7%
  • Loerie: 57,2%
  • Groendal: 67,2% (The ONLY dam to NOT increase)
  • Average all: 34,1 % of total combined capacity. (Due to an oversight the total Megalitres available have not been confirmed but should be in the region of 95 593 ML)

The inflow into our dams may result in a further increase of dam levels later this week.

It is important to note that the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is currently busy with the implementation of the R450 million upgrade of the Nooitgedacht Low level scheme to allow for an additional 70 Ml water to be pump into the distribution network every day.

Residents are reminded that strict water restrictions are still in place and a fine of R750 per transgression of the water restriction notices can be issued.

Please guys, we are so not out of the woods yet – please continue to conserve water.

As at 9 May 2011 the Loerie Dam Level was 57.2%
