Dagga: Is it cheaper than tobacco?

According to a South African Police Report a 35-year-old man who was travelling from Bloemfontein to Kuruman was arrested at a roadblock on the N8 this morning at about 10:30.

The man’s vehicle was searched and dagga weighing 0,460kg was confiscated. The seized dagga is estimated at a street value of R2 500.00. *

The suspect’s suspicious driving behaviour along the N8 from Bloemfontein was brought to the attention of members manning the roadblock by a concerned motorist, thus prompting his search.

The motorist that raised the alarm is thanked and law abiding motorists are encouraged to report motorists who are driving suspiciously on our roads. This will assist in curbing illegal transportation of goods and road accidents.

Let’s compare the above numbers to a box of cigarettes:

Typically a cigarette weighs approximately 1 gram of which the tobacco content can vary between 65-100% depending on the type of cigarette.

A November 2019 study showed that, in South Africa, the average price of cigarettes were, on average, R31.00 per 20-pack. Packs with 10 cigarettes were the most expensive at R38.00 and single stick (eintjies) were R37.00 each

What these numbers show is that (in normal economic times) a 1 gram dagga cigarette is nearly 7 times cheaper than a 1 gram tobacco cigarette.
