Dear MyPE
The DA will continue to monitor this morning’s service delivery protests and keep all communities informed about the situation. We cannot tolerate lawlessness, while the issues like crime, a lack of housing, electricity and water also need to be addressed as a matter of urgency.
Aston Bay road in Jeffreys Bay was blocked by protestors this morning who are dissatisfied over service delivery in the area.
At approximately 6.10am, a group of about 30 protestors started burning tyres and blocked off Aston Bay road with huge rocks. The number of protestors grew to over 100 with a portable toilet subsequently being burnt.
The community from Paradise Beach, Aston Bay and Marina Martinique were effectively cut off from Jeffreys Bay, while people trying to leave Ocean View for work were intimidated by protestors.
The Public Order Police Unit from Port Elizabeth responded to the scene around 9:00 am and the protest broke up at 11.15am after negotiations with the Police, the Municipality and the leaders of the protest.
It is uncertain if the issues surrounding the protest have been adequately addressed and drivers are urged to use the road with caution, as there is still broken glass and smouldering tyres on the road.
