DA lays negligence charge against the EC Department of Education

17 November 2014 By Alan Straton

Dear MyPE

The Democratic Alliance is outraged by the vandalism of Gqebera High School which cost R40 million to build. This loss constitutes wasteful and fruitless expenditure. The DA has laid a charge of negligence against the Department of Education in the Eastern Cape.

Over the past two months, the school has been vandalised; all that is left is the concrete structure of the building. Taxpayer’s money has been wasted and the Department is responsible for running this school into the ground.

Gqebera High school is one of six schools in Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality that have been neglected and vandalised by locals; two of these are Mlungisi Perfector in KwaNobuhle and Khumbulani High School in Sydenham.

Last year, it was reported that 310 schools were unofficially closed; Ilungelo Public School fell into this category after it was closed down by student’s parents in 2010. It was found that the school lacked suitable learning structures and teachers were severely negligent.

The Department needs to deal with the issues that lead to the abandonment of schools; for instance, the shortage of teachers makes it almost impossible to run a school successfully.

Education is the key to unlocking unlimited opportunities for our students. The DA urges the MEC for Education, Mandla Makupula, to take the time to efficiently plan the running of government schools in the Eastern Cape.
