DA calls for urgent intervention from department of transport to act on road carnage

It is with shock and horror that the Democratic Alliance has learnt of yet another spate of recent accidents that have happened on the Eastern Cape roads.

This tragic state of affairs is unacceptable and needs urgent intervention from the Department of Transport to stop this carnage.

The Democratic Alliance extends their condolences and good wishes to the victims and families of those that passed away and were injured in this morning’s accident on the N2 outside Grahamstown, as well as the other accidents that have happened over the last few days in the province.

On behalf of the Democratic Alliance I will be motioning the Legislature during our sitting on the 12th of September asking that high level intervention be done to investigate the cause of this carnage on our roads.

In addition I will be asking for an investigation into the issuing of both driving licences and roadworthy certificates by the Department of Transport.

It is clear that there needs to be serious improvement in driver education on our provincial road, and we are concerned that the issuing of fraudulent drivers licences and roadworthy certificates are a major contributing factor to these accidents on our provincial roads.

If there is no urgent high level investigation into the causes of this horrendous carnage and solution thereto, then this province will be in for a very bleak festive season on our roads.
