DA Calls for Criminal Charges to be laid against Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor

The Democratic Alliance in Nelson Mandela Bay has today written to the MEC of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Mlibo Qoboshiyane, asking him to intervene by, among others, laying criminal charges against the Executive Mayor and the Deputy Mayor for political interference in the municipality’s administration.

In the letter the DA has expressed our disappointment at the resignation of the City Manager and called upon the MEC to intervene and take appropriate action to ensure that the administration of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is stabilized forthwith.

The DA has demanded the following from the MEC:

  1. Consider invoking Section 139 (1) (c) of the Constitution, thereby dissolving Council and appointing an administrator to stabilise the administration of the municipality forthwith;
  2. In the alternative, instructing the NMBM Speaker to call an immediate emergency meeting of Council which you should attend and inter alia address Council on the following issues: The appointment of a suitably qualified Acting City Manager; The process to be followed and the guidance and assistance your department shall provide  in respect of the appointment of a permanent City Manager; The appointment of suitably qualified Acting Executive Directors (Section-57 Employees); The process to be followed and the guidance and assistance your department shall provide  in respect of the appointment of permanent Executive Directors (Section-57 Employees); Your decision as to the legality of the Council Meeting held on the 24th of July 2013.
  3. Immediate action (which should inter alia include criminal charges being brought) against the Executive Mayor and his deputy for their ongoing political interference into the administration of this institution of which you have documentary proof.

The ongoing political interference in the administration of the municipality must come to and end with immediate effect. The residents of Nelson Mandela Bay are suffering at the hands of an ANC led City Council that has abandoned its duty to effectively deliver services to the people.

The DA will not stand by and watch the ANC destroy our Metro. It is time for change in Nelson Mandela Bay and the DA is ready to bring the change that the people deserve. In 2014 voters will be able to position the DA as their government of choice for 2016 so that we can bring clean, effective government to your doorstep.
