Currie Cup Games Overshadowed by Port Elizabeth Test

The EP Kings take a back seat to the Castle Tri-Nations Test in Port Elizabeth between the Springboks and New Zealand at 17:00 on Saturday, we will see six Absa Currie Cup games this weekend – four in the Premier and two in the First Division, only one of which will be played on Saturday.

DHL Western Province will have to beat the MTN Golden Lions in Cape Town on Friday to avoid a similar three-match Absa Currie Cup losing streak as in 2010.

The only game on Saturday is between the Toyota Free State Cheetahs and the Ford Pumas in Bloemfontein.

In the Absa Currie Cup first division the EP Kings and Griffons have a bye and, as a consequence, the Regent Boland Cavaliers can close the gap between them and the EP Kings at the top of the Absa Currie Cup First Division log if they can score a bonus point victory over the SWD Eagles in Wellington on Friday afternoon.

The Kings are seven points ahead of the Cavaliers and will remain in first position on the log. It also won’t be an easy game for Boland, as they are facing an Eagles team on a three match winning streak. SWD can overtake their opponents this weekend on the log if they win this game.

In the only other game in the Absa Currie Cup First Division, the Border Bulldogs travel to the East Rand to face the Valke at the Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park.

Both teams are on five logs points, the same as the Tasol Solar Griffons, but the Bulldogs occupy last place on the log, while the Valke are fourth and the Griffons fifth.

  • 19 August – DHL Western Province vs MTN Golden Lions, kick-off at 19:00 at DHL Newlands, Cape Town. Referee: Marius Jonker
  • 19 August – The Sharks vs Platinum Leopards, kick-off at 19:10 at Mr Price Kings Park, Durban. Referee: Lourens van der Merwe
  • 19 August – Regent Boland Cavaliers vs SWD Eagles, kick-off at 16:00 at Boland Stadium, Wellington. Referee: Jaco Peyper
  • 19 August – Valke vs Border Bulldogs, kick-off at 17:00 at Barnard Stadium, Kempton Park. Referee: Stuart Berry
  • 20 August – Toyota Free State Cheetahs vs Ford Pumas, kick-off at 15:00 at Free State Stadium, Bloemfontein. Referee: Pro Legoete
  • 20 August – South Africa vs New Zealand, kick-off at 17:05 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Port Elizabeth.
