Crime-ridden Kuyga Primary School burgled seven times in one month

The Kuyga Primary School in Port Elizabeth has been an ongoing target for criminals, who have burgled the school at least seven times in the last month, stealing, among others, the electrical cables and leaving the school without electricity, which is vital for classes to function.

This came to light following an oversight conducted at the school today, where I was accompanied by DA Constituency Leader, Bobby Stevenson, MPL, DA councilors, as well as the SGB chairperson.

During the oversight it became abundantly clear that the school buildings are falling into disrepair. The theft of electricity cables has left the school with no electricity for over a month now.

I have already submitted questions to the Department of Education regarding the state of the school, and the lack of action in addressing this matter, but to date have not received any responses.

I will now be writing to the MEC for Education, Fundile Gade, calling for the Department to take urgent action to ensure that there is permanent security presence to protect the existing infrastructure. I will also request the electricity supply to the school be restored, and that the infrastructure that has been damaged is fixed without any further delay.

The DA believes that basic education is key to creating an opportunity ladder for all South Africans, and the children attending Kuyga Primary School are being deprived of these opportunities by criminal elements.
