Cricket’s Friendship Cup

17 September 2013 By Alan Straton

Cricketing fans in the Nelson Mandela Bay are in for a treat as the Chevrolet Warriors take on sponsor rivals, the Chevrolet Knights, in the inaugural annual Friendship Cup later this month.

In a bid to give fans some exciting cricketing action ahead of the official season start in October, the Warriors and Knights embark on an epic challenge that will pit them against one another in both the two-day and one-day cricketing format at Axxess St George’s Park. The coaches of both franchises have devised a unique point scoring system which will give the team the opportunity to gain points over the three days. The challenge will take an interesting twist and leave the comfort of the field to areas where some players may not always fare so well.

The fifth day of the challenge will see both teams swopping bat and balls for clubs and dimples on the golf course. Two Warriors will team up with two Knights in the four ball format, with teams once again earning points on a grading system.

The fun of the week culminates in a track day challenge where teams will participate in driving challenges at Aldo Scribante, putting some very capable Chevrolet vehicles to the test, with speed and precision being the order of the day.

Supporters of both teams are invited to attend any of the cricketing games at Axxess St George’s as entrance is free, so bring the family along to witness some of the country’s finest warming up to what is set to be a thrilling season.

The cricketing section of the challenge is set to take place on 23 – 26 September, with the golf challenge on 27 September and concluding with the Driving Skills Challenge on 28 September.

One lucky member of the public attending each of the game days will be randomly selected to attend the driving skills day. Each of these lucky few will get the chance to join their team mates on the race course, adding to the team’s final score.

The winning team of the first inaugural Cup will be announced at a dinner attended by South African Paralympic star, Natalie du Toit.

For any further details on the Friendship Cup, find the Warriors online on Facebook or Twitter where any questions will be answered relating to the challenge.

The layout for the challenge is as follows:

  • Monday/Tuesday, 23/24 September: 2-day Game
  • Wednesday, 25 September: 1-day Game
  • Thursday, 26 September: 1-day Game
  • Friday, 27 September: Golf Day
  • Saturday, 28 September: Driving Skills Challenge
