Dear Editor
Today, 9 April 2024, the DA was vindicated in its efforts to remove Anele Qaba as CEO of the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) after the Gqeberha High Court handed down a ruling that set aside Qaba’s unlawful and irregular appointment.
This vindication follows after the DA acted as whistle-blower in respect of a manipulated and unlawful appointment process that was little more than a blatant attempt at state capture in Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB).
Qaba, who is a close friend of NMB Executive Mayor, Cllr Gary van Niekerk, was appointed to the position of CEO of this municipal entity in June 2023. A mere two days after Cllr Van Niekerk was elected as mayor, he personally wrote to the MBDA Chairperson, Glenda Perumal, to conclude the appointment process of the CEO despite concerns that Perumal allegedly manipulated the recruitment processes.
The DA at the time wrote to National Treasury in order to request their urgent intervention in what was little more than a jobs-for-pals deployment.
The judgement which has seen Qaba’s appointment set aside with costs, can only be described as a victory for the people of Nelson Mandela Bay. This ruling should send a clear message to politicians and officials alike that the Metro is not open for looting or state capture.
The DA will now shift our focus to the actions of the MBDA board which has not dispensed its duties with the necessary fiduciary care.
The DA is resolute in our battle to rescue NMB from the ANC/EFF/NA/PA coalition of corruption government. We are in your corner, fighting for you.
Regards
Cllr Retief Odendaal
DA NMB Caucus Leader
