Could AI Errors Be Entering Your Excel Reports?

6 May 2026 By Alan Straton

Durban: As the use of AI tools such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot rapidly expands across South African workplaces, College Africa Group (CAG) is warning businesses about a growing but often overlooked risk: employees relying on AI-generated outputs without proper verification.

From Excel reports and financial summaries to HR documents and management reporting, AI-generated content can appear highly professional and convincing — even when important details are inaccurate, incomplete, or misleading.

“AI can significantly improve productivity, but it does not replace human judgment,” says Arnold Muscat, Director of College Africa Group. “Our concern is that many employees trust AI outputs simply because they sound correct. AI produces language — not truth.”

CAG believes that strong Microsoft Excel skills, critical thinking, and structured validation processes are becoming more important — not less — in the age of AI.

The organisation’s corporate AI training programmes focus on helping employees:

  • Validate AI-generated information,
  • Use Excel to verify calculations and reports,
  • Understand AI limitations and hallucinations,
  • Apply POPIA-aware AI usage practices,
  • Improve prompting and decision-making skills,
  • Reduce workplace risks associated with inaccurate AI outputs.

According to CAG, many organisations are introducing AI tools faster than employees are being trained to use them responsibly. This creates a gap between technology adoption and practical governance.

“Businesses should not assume that AI-generated reports are automatically accurate,” Muscat explains. “Employees still need to review outputs, validate numbers, and understand the business context behind the information.”

CAG’s training programmes are designed for finance teams, HR professionals, administrators, managers, and decision-makers who want practical, workplace-focused AI guidance rather than theoretical discussions.

College Africa Group provides corporate training throughout South Africa in:

  • Microsoft Excel,
  • Microsoft Project,
  • AI in the Workplace,
  • Microsoft Copilot Readiness,
  • Professional Workplace Skills.
